The Labrador retriever comes in three different colors: yellow, chocolate and black. Any other color is not acceptable according to the AKC standards for the Labrador retriever. Occasionally, you may see some slight variations of the three colors such as brindle, black and tan or gold, but these colors are unacceptable as true Lab colors. A yellow Lab, however, may have some different shades of yellow which range from tan to gold to reddish fox. The majority of them are just yellow, however. Some breeders may even advertise a "rare" Lab color. It's rare because it shouldn't be part of the Labrador. There are several different health problems that affect the Labrador retriever throughout their life. Some are easy to spot and others may go undiagnosed until it's too late to really help the dog. One of the most creative and effective programs developed and implemented in many countries that involves both dogs and inmates is the specialized Assistance Dog program. These programs go under a variety of names however they are unique in that prisoners are responsible for training an Assistance Dog that will, after training is completed, be provided for a disabled veteran to be able to live a better quality of life.

There are several different groups that rank or rate dogs based on intelligence, however specifically how these rankings or ratings are determined is not always clear. In some of the rankings it is done by owner survey, which isn't always all that accurate but it is a definite poll of the more popular breeds.
