Palomino Weird Facts/Did You Know?

[-]On the CBS television station there was a particularly famous Palomino horse, Mister Ed, he was born in 1949. He started his career as a practical parade horse in El Monte, California. The series ran from 1961 to 1966, there were a couple different horses that stood in and played the part. Genetics And Coloration in Palominos

Before breeders understood that the palomino coat is actually a genetic factor, not a different color, the palomino was considered to be a unique coloration. With the increase in the understanding of genetics, breeders and researchers now understand that the palomino coloration actually occurs because of a dilute gene, known as the cream dilute gene, acting on a chestnut colored horse. Through the dilution gene the chestnut or red color is diluted down to the traditional gold color of the palomino and the mane and tail is diluted to the flaxen or light color most commonly associated with the palomino coloration. There is a range of color differences in the dilution depending on how strongly the gene acts on the base coat color. [...]

Palominos As Show Horses

There is no doubt that the flashy, showy coat and dramatic color combinations of the gold coat and the flaxen mane and tail make the palomino coloration a popular addition to shows and parades. Since the horse does have a dramatic coat presentation they are eye catching in the ring and are also one of the most recognized coat colorations, even for people that are not really familiar with horses. Palominos, since they are a color registry rather than a specific breed registry, can be shown in many different types of events. The most stereotypical type of show for a palomino is the western pleasure class where the beautiful and ornate tack as well as the fancy western dress of the riders can really contrast and highlight the rich golden color of the palomino. Palominos also make great stock horses and many are seen in reining, cutting and even rodeo events. [...]

Palominos In Hollywood

Throughout the history of television and the movies there have been famous palomino horses that have been much loved by both the audience and the stars. One of the first and probably the most famous of the show horses that were palomino in coloration was Trigger. Trigger was ridden by Roy Rogers in almost all his western movies starting in 1938. Trigger, originally named Golden Cloud, was sired by a Thoroughbred stallion and an unregistered grade palomino mare. Although Golden Cloud was originally a movie rental horse, Roy Rogers first saw him in 1938 and immediately bought him and then renamed him Trigger. It is reported that Trigger was renamed from Golden Cloud due to his lightening fast ability to learn new tricks and his almost human ability to understand what Roy Rogers wanted. [...]
