Hello! Does anybody have information about what to do for a runt puppy? We have purchased a nursing bottle and milk, but the puppy won't eat. Any suggestions? Also, if a puppy doesn't live during birth...does the bitch eat the still born puppy? Thank you!
You should be there to see that the bitch does NOT eat a pup. You should be Alpha, tell her how it goes. A pup that is pushed aside should be gently put on a teat so that it gets the colostrum(limited). And, you should have enough control of the bitch to get it nursing . All pups are important. Trust me, there is NOTHING as sad as a dead pup in your hand, and you always wonder when you look at it's still body, "if I know more, will I prevent this?".
Some would say to let natures take its course and some would say do everything possible. I would do whatever it takes to make that puppy live! I can't imagine holding a dead puppy or even see it slowly die.
I would find a vet that is as concerned as you are. There may be some medical intervention that can take place, and if not some great suggestions. I would try to dip the nipple of the bottle in some sugar and water maybe that will make the pup more intrested. Who knows?
I know of one person that had a litter of pit bull puppies who counted the nipples and puppies and subtracted 2 pups from the litter! That IMO is totally wrong. God will not give more then it can handle and he should of just left it to God!
The runt's of the litter can either go two ways. Make a total recovery and people will see that it is a fighter and fight for that one pup, or if it is ment to be die. Either way, i would do what it takes to make the first the fact!
