Because the term 'Puggle' refers to a baby echidna, some registries are now using this dogs given name of Chinese Begueule, which refers to the the dogs Chinese (pug) ancestry and Begueule which is the French word meaning "gape throat", (a name given to the Beagle, referring perhaps to the noisy clamour of the dogs when gathered into a pack). Selective breeding of the Chinese Begueule has made significant progress into decreasing the breathing problems associated with the Pug. It also adds the calm temperament often associated with the Beagle. The 'breed' is selected by keeping more of the look of the Pug, with the longer nose and temperament of the Beagle. I can only find documentation of these dogs planned matings dating back to 1998. With such a newly 'planned' breed, it is crucial to seek out a responsible breeder when purchasing a Chinese Begueule. Proper documentation, pedigree, and responsible breeding will surely make this dog continue in popularity.

Its origin is hazy, but most believe the first puggle puppy was created during a jailbreak at a kennel. A frisky male pug must have nosed his way to a female beagle and nestled down for the night. What resulted was a litter of crossbred puppies resembling baby bloodhounds and aptly dubbed puggles.

Coat: Consists of short hairs. Colors can be black, beige, or silver. Must have a black mask.

Character: Easy-going and straightforward, Puggles are sociable, intelligent and calm.

Temperament: This dog gets along well with children, other dogs, and any household pets. It may get jealous if its owner ignores it.

Care: Loose hairs should be removed periodically with a rubber brush. Special lotion needs to be applied to the facial creases.

Training: It is necessary to be gentle when training this breed, as they are very sensitive to the tone of your voice.

Activity: Puggles love to romp and play outdoors, provided the waether is good. Always make sure they have a cool place to spend the day if it is hot outside.

Description : Puggles are a relatively new hybrid dog breed produced by mating a select female Beagle to a select male Pug- resulting in a very sweet-tempered, affectionate (but not yippy, hyper, or insecure) pup that is very low-maintenance family-friendly (great with children and other dogs), loose-skinned, wrinkly-faced, endearing in both personality and looks. Well into their adult lives, Puggles exemplify the best of what dogs are all about- loyalty, companionship, and affection; translating into a breed that is very eager to please its owner. As well, Puggles are durable, hardy dogs that can easily take a bit of rough-housing (boys love them for this.) Girls appreciate their affectionate, lap-loving qualities.

Puggles usually get to be 14-20lbs. as adults, are 13-15" high at the shoulder, typically have a curly tail, are tan with a black muzzle or black- earning them the nickname of "miniature mastiffs".

how about the chinese crested, which is like XtantXhuicholITa, or something like that. sheesh, the list goes on. maybe we should start a pronunciation thread to go along with the breeds. except you have to do all the work, and i'll make all the dorky comments:).

I have read that to breed a puggle it should be a female beagle and a male pug. Is there a reason it can't be the other way? Will I end up with some genetic freak of a dog?

I just came across this forum in search of a dog to convince my hubby that pugs are great. I thought I'd let you know that when I was four or so, (would have been around 1980) our female pug bore a litter of "puggles" as we called them (I am not sure who was the promiscous one). My parents were worried that no one would want the cross breed...they were gone very quickly, and people were calling offering to buy them after they were gone. I don't remember at all what the looked like, but my parents said they were cute. I'd love to run across one. Maybe if I ever get a pug...!!
