hi.. if anyone knows about teacup chihuahuas... i am desperate... i have an 11 week old teacup chihuahua ... i bought him 12 days ago from a very reputable place... but he is terribly sick... he is absolutely refusing all food... of the 12 days i have had him he has been at the vet for 7... he had thrush in his system and now a horrible repioritory infection w/ coughing and sneezing... i am scared he is going to die... please help me what should i do? they wont give hime an iv and are still force feeding him...right now he has lost 3 oz.... he is down to 15 oz... he is so sweet and loving and i don't want to lose him... if anyone has been through this please tell me what to do
Has the vet said anything about hypoglycemia? Chihuahuas, especially really small ones are prone to that. I would put a little Karo syrup in his water or dab it on some food. Will he eat canned food? If he won't eat at all, I would buy some Nutracal and put a finger tip amount on your finger and rub it on the roof of his mouth. I would also put some yogart or cottage cheese in with his food. It is healthy for them and they love it. Sometimes at that age they can't eat well with such small teeth and mouths.
Since the vet says its respiratory, I would just keep listening to the vet and do what they say. Don't handle the puppy too much or play with him too much. Make an area for him that is quiet and put a heating pad set on low under his blankets. Make sure he has food and water available at all times. Watch for signs like stumbling, or if his patella (the soft spot on his head) is sunken in, that indicates that he could be getting dehyrated. Good luck!
thank you for responding... the vet said that my pup was past the period of being hypoglycemic... they have tried nutrical and karo... he won't eat it... they have tried cottage cheese prime rib he may take one bit for the day and not go back to it... his hair is falling out from his head... and he sleeps all the time today he could barely walk or open his eyes... they have him on an antibiotic for the thrush but he refuses to eat... he is constantly itching his ears... what do you think? he seems like he wants to nurse but wont take a bottle... or the mother's milk suppliment...
Open his mouth and put the karo syrup or the nutrical stuff in his mouth with your finger. Im sorry, I dont know much else of what you could do, but I know if it's forced into his mouth he'll swallow. Good luck with your puppy, I hope he pulls through.
I'll keep him in my prayers. I think he'll pull through as long as he maintains his strength, which will be hard if he won't eat. But even if you've got to force it on him, by putting it in his mouth, do it to keep up his strength. His body will be able to fight better if it's strong. :-)
I suggest taking your pup to another vet. I have three chihuahuas. Two of my chihuahuas are tiny. They are full grown and weigh under 4lbs each. When I got each one at six weeks of age it weighed less then 12 ounces. That is less than 1lb.
I suggest taking your puppy to another vet. Apparently your vet does not know what is going on or they would suggest something that would help! Did you take your puppy back to its owner and let them know what is going on? What did they say?
I never really too much problems with my chihuahuas. They are very small and have to be taken very well care of. You have to be so very careful to not let them bump thier heads on anything. They have a soft spot on the top of thier head. My chihuahuas favorite food is Purina moist and meaty beef and cheese dog food. Is is not hard at all it is very chewy.
I am sorry, but it sounds like your pup is not going to make it if something is not changed. Like I said earlier take it to another vet or an emergency clinic. You need to get another opinion!
I agree with some of the others, You need a second opinion. Dont wait these guys can go down quick.
My dog was sick when he was a pup and pulled through. you have to make sure he eats and drinks if his sugar gets to low youll have even bigger problems.
I dont understand why they wont give him an IV? When my dog was sick and weak they gave him an IV right away. They are to tiny to miss a meal or water. Get it done. keep taking him to DR.s till one does.
They'' give the pup and IV in the neck and he'll have a little hump in his neck but dont worry is just the fluid stored in his neck it goes away after a few hours
Ohhhhh! Good grief! I realize that you love tiny Roo, and I hope that you can either find another Vet that knows how to treat little Chi's, or the one you are currently using gets it right. They are very delicate little dogs. I know so many people that think they want a tiny dog, but have no concept of how labor-intensive their care can be. We have used Lactated Ringers Solution for hydration (that is most likely what the Vet will use) and Karo syrup. PLEASE try Chicken Broth. You will need to dilute it very well. Like 1 part Broth to every 4 parts water, probably force feeding it. After I read the part of your post that said there was some nursing instinct, makes me think that heaven help you, the breeder you got your pup from may not have fully weaned the pup before you got it. If this is the case you need to call them ASAP. Premature separation from mom in these tiny Chi's is not appropriate. Most cases the breeder will leave the pups with mom for an extra couple of weeks. This means that the pups are 9-10 weeks old before they are completely weaned. I hope that Little Roo can be saved. Keep us posted.
THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR THE ADVISE.. PLEASE, PLEASE ANYONE WHO HAS DETAILED INFORMATION THAT CAN HELP LITTLE ROO... I WOULD BE SO GRATEFUL... THE VET KEEPS SAYING HE WANTS TO WAIT IT OUT... BELLANCHICO, WHEN DID YOUR LITTLE ONE FINALLY TURN THE CORNER? MY HEART WAS BREAKING TODAY... HE COULD BARELY KEEP HIS EYES OPEN BUT HE KEPT TRYING TO LOOK AT ME... IF THERE IS ANYTHING I CAN TELL THE VET ... PLEASE ANYONE... TELL ME.. AND I WILL LOOK FOR SOMEONE ELSE TOMORROW... THE VET SEEMS TO BE TRYING... HE IS EVEN TAKING LITTLE ROO HOME AT NIGHT... THIS HAS BEEN SUCH A NIGHTMARE... THIS POOR LITTLE PUP REFUSES EVEN WATER... EVERYTHING IS BEING FORCED. THE VET SAID THEY CAN'T FEED WITH A TUBE INTO THE STOMACH AS IT MAY BACK UP INTO HIS LUNGS AND SUFFOCATE HIM... I DON'T KNOW WHY THEY WON'T TRY AN IV... ONE VET THERE AT THE HOSPITAL, SHE IS YOUNG... NEWLY OUT OF SCHOOL 1 YEAR, SHE WANTS TO DO THE IV BUT THE OTHER WHO HAS PRACTICED FOR MANY YEARS IS HOLDING OUT... HE SAID THE THRUSH IS VERY PAINFUL BUT THAT HAS NOW CLEARED... BUT I CAN'T IMAGINE WHY ROO WONT EVEN TAKE SUGAR WATER... I AM SO SAD... THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR HELP... PLEASE PRAY FOR ROO MORE THAN ANYTHING...
what does it mean that roo may not have been completely weaned? do you mean taken from his mom too early? when i would lay on the floor nearby, he would try to nuzzle under my arm.... he won't even take water... he turns away and even pushes with his little paw... i knew he would be a greeat deal of work but i was prepared for it... we desperately wanted something to love... i knew it would be 24/7 for quite a while and loved evey minute of it... but he just wouldn't eat and i was scared of the hypoglycemia... this vet keeps saying wait it out... but if he wasn't completely weaned how do wait that out... we could not bear it is something happened to this little guy...
PuPzRuS... now i remember ... something the breeder said... and she has been acalling me twice a day... that she even kept little roo a little longer than usual as he was a little slower than normal... what would that mean? roo was on antibiotics when we brought him home but they told me thatthey sent all their dogs home on it as a preventative... have you ever heard of this? thank you again for being there
Without an iv you need to FORCE that karo syrup down every hour. I still don't get why no IV.
I feel for you, but it sounds like your pup may have been born with a weaknened immune system to be this sick in the first place, either that or wasn't cared for properly by the breeder. What meds were used for the thrush and infection. Antibiotics can make dogs feel sick, too, especially the ones used for fungus infections. They are strong and have side effects such as diarrhea, loss of appetite, shaking. Just keep on force feeding and keeping him warm. The rest is up to nature.
I am so sorry to hear you're in such an awful position. I have been breeding toys for 20+ years and take it from me you need a new vet. I have seen a 5 yr old Pom develop hypoglycemia from stress. It happened 2 or 3 times a year and in her case all she would do is hang her head, drool and weave. Call your local kennel club, get the name of some toy breeders, then call them and ask who they using for a vet when you get 2 or 3 people giving you the same answer that's the vet you're looking for.
The first good vet I was ever involved with had several toy breeders among her clientele. She maintained that toys were at least a year old before the worst risk of hypoglycemia was past.
You could try tempting baby with some boiled chicken sprinkled with garlic and chopped real fine. Rather than cottage cheese I usually try to force plain yogurt, as it is pretty much digested, has no lumps and it will replace the intestinal fauna that the antibiotics have killed, add some white corn syrup 1/2 cc every 4 hours. Later I mix it with canned chicken cat food as cats are way more fussy about what they eat and the canned chicken ( like Friskey's) stinks and seems to appeal.
What kind of antibiotics was your puppy on when you recieved it? Sulfa based is for coccidia, metronidozole for giardia, and I think campylobactre (dog show crud) is erythromyacin. I wouldn't call any of these common but it can happen.
I sure hope everything works out for you.

I'm praying for your little Roo, I hope he gets better!!! Anything new today? Have you tried forcing the Karo syrup? What about cheese, most dogs love cheese. I don't understand why they won't do an IV, I thought that was one of the first things they usually did for a very sick dog.
Dear Roo, I hope things are better today, I prayed for the little guy, but you know what he really needs is some intervention. this vet is doing the wrong thing by not giving the dog an iv. Unless there is a reason why not to (and i cant think of one) he should be doing it . My little Chico was sick for about a week. They never did figure out what was wrong with him, but I'll tell you after the iv his strength increased and he was able to hold his head up and drink alittle. Right now your little roo has no strength left. He has depleted all his bodies resources by now. Iv is a must if he cant be force fed for fear of back up into his lungs. Have they ruled out other sicknesses? What does the Vet think his age is? can he tell? If hes trying to nurse the vet should pick up on that. Maybe he needs another Mama dog? Like a serogate. I wonder if thats possible. just a thought.
Have you been in contact with the person you got the pup from? what are they saying. They have a resposibility to give you an healthy pup. I hope you brought this to there attention right away. They may be responsible for vet bills ect. depending on where you live. By the way, hows the rest of the litter doing?you should find out. good luck , keep us posted
hello everyone... i am so exhausted... i have been up all night, but roo looked a little better this morning!!! God is hearing our prayers!!! i didn't go into it last night, but our nightmare has been compounded by an earlier incident... we wanted a puppy so badly, that at christmas i broke down and bought an adorable little guy from a pet store on a saturday... well that monday when we went to have him checked at the vet, we were told that he had a horrible heart mumur and waould most likely die in the very near future... so we returned him to the pet shop with much heart break... since then we learned not to go to a pet shop... so all the while mourning that little guy, we looked for good breaders to buy the nexzt pup... and now this... this is killing us... two pups w/in a month of each other...i am begging God... and i thank all of you for your support right now... my girls are devastated.. and my heart breaks every time i think about both of these puppies... i will up date everyone after i speak with the vet today...
