As some people of this forum know, I am getting a Female great pyrenees puppy in may. Now i like males, mainly becaus their coat is more fuller and it has the fuller maine around its neck. The females dont have the main, but is it still possible for them to have a full "poofy" coat like the males. Thanks....
~also we are getting this pup from my moms friend. She owns the kennel Tip N Chip. here are a few of her dogs at shows
Amount of coat is genetic and the rest is care. Once you learn how to groom her for show you will learn how to accentuate her coat. But bitches do get ruffs, it just takes a bit longer then the dogs. Also remember, after her season she may or maynot blow gigantic amounts of coat, you won't know till then.
But properly grooming her will accentuate her coat. However many bitches don't develop a massive ruff until maturity and in hte pyreneese that is often not until 3 and 4 years of age.
So yes she will develop one, but you will have to have deal with the wait, its the suckyest part.
Thanks for the info PyrMom...... also the pic of "Derbys Insparation" is the father of the pups... His sperm was frozen and was you know what to get into the female. We plan on showing her and having a litter of pups out of her.
If you'd like to see my crew, you can see their pictures, their pups' pictures (geesh, still can't bellieve it's been a YEAR!), their pedigrees and I have photos of 3 out of the 4 "gandparents"...never did get one for Beau's Dam. Oh well! http://pyrpups.com
Once was enough! Beau REALLY jumped the gun on me and sired the litter when he was only ten moths old. I thought I'd never survive those pups! I am too old for this~ Since I lost Angel after the hurricanes, I am ever so thankful that we not only had the pups, but that I decided to keep one. I held back one male and one female until everyone passed 4 months, then kept one of the females. She sooooo looks just like her mom (when she's clean~grin).
I forgot to mention the name. I looked through the pedigrees and decided to go with somthing different for my crew. Angel was Cat's (my nickname) Angelic Snow, Neige Angelique du Chat. Beau is Cat's Beautiful Raphael, Beau Raphael Du Chat and Arwen is Angel's Snow Arwen , Arwen De la Neige Angelique.
I was torn between the French and Spainish translations, but te majority of both Angel & Beau's ancestors were French names...so
Hi Roxy. Congratulations on your upcoming addition to the family. I have a Great Pyrenees male named Mason. He is 3 years old and the best dog I could have hoped for. I do not know what lines he has in him as he was a rescue. All I know is he's beautiful ;). He does have quite a mane of fur around his neck but the rest of his body is a bit silkier and wavy. I live in a co-op in Manhattan and he has adjusted very well to the city life. We go for daily walks and venture to the dog park on the weekends. Mason is a very calm , easy going fellow whose feathers are not ruffled easily.
Thanks Huron~ the standard weight for a great pyrenees bitch is 80 lbs i beleive. :) I cannot wait either. I have some name possibilities picked out like : Bridgitte, Mercedes, Tinkerbell (lol a great name for a big dog) ...i dunno those are a few that i have been thinking about. :) She is gonna be a show dog so needs a show dog name.
I would love answer your question about the coat but Freya (my 6 month old Pyr) is alway covered in mud so I'm not even sure she is white underthere! We live on a farm so she likes to run and play in the pond and mud. We are in the North East and still have snow here and there!
Names: My daughter wanted to name her Luffa.
They are very smart dogs and very loyal to the ones they love.
Everyone is right, they are loving, gentle and can be trusted with small children (as long as you train them NOT to jump on anyone).
Biggest problem is the will to roam, which is inherit in the breed. They are bred to roam vast areas of the mountain range and live with the flocks they are guarding. This presents a problem if you do not have a really secure area for them AND train them to stay when an open door presents itself.
Roxy, I'm sure you'll find JUST the right name!
I forgot to ask, is your girl all white or will she have markings? Or are you not sure yet?
The Badge masks remind me of Gizmo from Gremlins (if any of you are old enough to remember that movie~lol). SO cute!
Hi Guys, I have been gone since thursday night being in indiana. We dont have any names picked out yet and we know that we are getting a female. We havent seen the pups yet (breeder is a but computer illiterate. lol ) Since her and my mom are friends they have talked. Last time was last week. She is going to give us the best female she has and we might co-own with the breeder, so she can show her. So depending on wich one is the best for us, will decide the coat color. I prefer all white becasue our previous pyr from tip n chip was all white. The badger mask can be cute if in the correct places. Cant Wait!
Before my hubby brought Angel home to me, I had fallen in love with the Badger masked Pyrs. Once I got my all white girl (with VERY light, faint fawn on the ears), I decided all white was fine with me~grin.
If you co-own, will the breeder keep the pup or will she live with you?
I co-own one of my litter. He lives with his "other mom", who is grooming him for show, with a bit of time out for her 1st litter of Newfs.
Prymom~ if we were to co-own the pry would live with us. Lol Judy is buisy with all her pyrs and doesnt need another one running around. Her pups are in high command, but since we are freinds and loving dog owners she is putting is first. Many of her pyrs are shown in japan. Her pyrs go very world wide. cant wait!
