it's very important to check your dogs body and skin...if you notice patches of hair missing, especially chest, armpits, in creases of their hine legs, and chin...most likely it's a allergic reaction to his food, or not getting enough nutrients.....some pits have to be careful with the ash crude amt in certain dog foods.believe it or not but Pits have very delicate and senitive skin...and proun to skin problems more then other dogs...mange is a big factor...don't ask me why ..i think it has to do with the breeding of the dogs.and usually passed down from it's parents.....all that can be nipped in the butt, at an early stage.........it's all in the dog food we feed them
they are also prone to mast cell cancer . but useally seen in white pits and older dogs .we lost our female pit to it .which was tough she was allergic to the histimines that the cancer gave off .a ear infection which didnt respond to antibotics .so we sent her to rainbowbridge to end her suffering .still wonder if there was more we could of done .?
I am so sorry you lost your pet at 14 months of age, that must be horrendously painful...I am so sorry, My pitbull Baby is 11 months old and I have had so many problems with her, a lot of urine infections. Now Pyometra and she is getting spayed tomorrow, if you pray, please pray for my Baby that everything turns out fine, thanks so much . Grace
Mine get little bald spots if they eat cheap food. And dry skin also. I found a shampoo that does well and stick with that because some shampoos will give mine dandruff also.
Demodectic mange is hereditary, passed from the mother. The mother can be a carrier and show no signs of the disease herself. But if you know who the dam of a pup with demodectic mange is, she should be spayed because she is a carrier of the disease and will pass it on to her next litter also. It's a kind of autoimmune disease, where the puppy doesn't have a strong enough immune system to keep the mites (which are present on all dogs, but at a small level) from multiplying and getting out of hand.
My Pitbull Shelby is 2 years old, has had a couple of episodes of very itchy shin, no fleas, steroid pills took care of it last year. Now I noticed spots on the side of her where the fur is coming off. She has had the same food for the last 6-9 months, she also has a problem with loose bowels, vets have been no help, anyone with any advice?
Hi, my dog Shelby (Pitbull) used to have a smooth black coat until recently. Now I notice patches where the fur is missing, she has no fleas. Anyone have any ideas, she has used the same food for almost a year. Rick
Thanks ,it was a very tough time in my life.Tigger now has a mass cell tumor I have to have looked at. Sadie use to get red spots on her belly , big ones , and she also got a bad case of mange at 3 months old. Maybe there is some truth to Pits having more skin problems and cancers then other breeds.
My Pitbull Opie has the same problem. His coat was beautiful and shiny. Now his skin is lumpy, he gets pimple looking bumps, and his skin is very itchy and red. It appears in spots to be almost like psorisis. He is loosing his hair in spots and severly thinning in others. I started him on enzymes. The symptoms described on their web site seemed to match opie's. He has been on it for a couple months and the site said it would get worse before better. It is worst, I hope it gets better.
Hi, I'm new to site, but just wanted to tell you that I had a female pit that passed away almost 3yrs. ago. She was the love of my life & I still miss her so much. She was 13yrs. old. That's not why I wrote , I had another dog, part pit, that had the same problem you are talking about & it was because he was allergic to flea bites. He could get just one bite from a flea and it started. I took him to the vet, that's how I found out what was wrong and he had to get, what I called, itchy shot about every 3 mos. or so. At the time I lived in Fl. and the fleas were horrible even though he was an inside dog. Thank goodness my pit that I got later did not have that problem. I have a cat that has the same problem & he's going to be 12 in Feb. and I have to take him in every so often to get his itchy shot. I now live in Ga.(again), but the fleas are bad here, too. Hope this helps someone. Marbar
Hi !!! I have 2 pit bulls, my older one nikita she is about 12 years old she was a rescue dog and was being abused, i got her when i was 18 some guy was going to kill her so i took her from him she is my guardian angel i am 28 now and she is still going strong! My 2nd is nitro he is 4 he is a little baby very cuddlely, always has to be between my husband and I and when we leave for work he gets so upset he is so cute. Today i found an engorged tick on his neck besides being very upset i did not spot it earlier when i should have, i am worried i pulled it out and it left what looks like a scab and a brown spot in the middle which i am sure is the head, the scab looks almost like a blister, i used a match tip after blowing it out and also put some bacteria spray on,anyone ever have this happen or anyone have any idea's?
