I recently spoke with a person I went to high school with that I hadn't seen in years. We started talking about dogs and one of the jobs he had about a year ago was helping breed BEAGLES at a HUGE facility that sells them only for research. He said that they use Beagles because of their large veins and docile personalities. The facility had over 4000 adult dogs and he assisted in breeding about 25-40 dogs per day, as well as birthing and general care. I was shocked to here of a facility like this in my area. I can't even tell you half of the horror stories that he mentioned, but here is the example. A girl had problems whelping and a pup was stuck for several days. No one noticed until the rotten smell became so noticable (imagine the smell in that place). Instead of getting her medical attention they simply put her down, because she was a 'damaged producer'. No regard for the animals at all. Complete litters being kept alive for a few weeks, then after the results are in-- all destroyed. Basically the exact same condition as lab rats. Only puppies. The saddest thing is that they don't even allow the dogs to be placed in homes after they are done popping out tons of pups. After a dog weans her last pups she is put down. Sad, sad, sad. What can be done? Why dogs, instead of smaller animals?
Contact your congressman, if you bug him enough he may actually look into and if not, contact animal activists groups, try and take it public. I have never heard of such a thing. If you get public with it your congressman may feel obligated especially if you through up his name and say you contacted him and he hasn't done anything. They hate bad publicity. One question where do you live?

Southwestern Michigan. The research place is somewhere in Kalamazoo County, then next county over. I need to try to get more info, like an exact address. I am sure very, very few people in even that county know that it's even there (and this is a pretty urban county 300,000 people or so).
I own a beagle and that just really gets to me. I cannot beleive they don't even adopt the dogs out after giving them a life of hell. What kind of people are they? Actually I already know, cruel and heartless.
The numbers are astronimical too. 4000 at one time? I asked the reasoning behind not TRYING to find homes for them, but their are 'liabily issues'. He was saying that an individual isn't even ALLOWED to purchase any of the dogs. The pups go to other research facilities, universities, ect... and all have to agree to destroy the dogs after testing. They really don't have a chance-- Believe me I asked 'What if I formed a rescue or business and purchased their old breeding dogs?' My friend didn't think it could happen. Why would anyone want the publicity? They are fine without the activists parked outside their door. There are 2 other 'rat factories and research facilities that use small 'lab animals', in the early 1990's they were picketed a lot.... but eventually the activists went awy and the facilies are still there.
I am sure that that level they have to be licensed and regulated, I am sure animal control, USDA, and others are very knowledgable about what is going on there and don't do anything about it.
I know that using companion animals for research is hard to take, but sometimes there is no alternative. Facilities like the one you describe don't do science any favors, either, if the animals are unhealthy. The best thing for anyone to do is to get involved. Petition that the breeder be inspected, and chances are you may find that they are in violation of local ordinances and health laws. Also, offer to place the dams in rescue after the breeder is through with them. Maybe if the heat is turned up on them, they will work toward treating thier animals with dignity. Also, there are scientists working hard every day to develop laboratory tests that mimic the results obtained by animal models. So have a little hope!
It sounded like a large corporation. I am sure that they dotted i's and crossed t's but it is no more humane. I am sure they are fed, and kept on 'proper' worming and vaccination regimines, it's just not a very appealing place to live if your a beagle.
Unfortunatly, all research places like this one are inspected, so that really won't help. Really the best thing would be to contact your congressmen to help at least get the dams rescued after they are done with their whelpings.
I know the gutwrenching feeling you are having, it is just really sad, but they feel it's needed to prolong the lives of other dogs everywhere and in some cases humans. I know many that are in the rat industry-raising them for pets and showing feel the same way. It's not easy to take, but with some encouragement, maybe at least the dams can be placed.
yep, places like this exist. i have a "retired" research beagle, her name is minnie, shes 7 years old. she was at glaxo smithkline, a large pharmaceutical company. not only is this kind of life sad for beagles, its sad for all animals. LARGE OR SMALL, CUTE OR UGLY. The only way to make a change is to do something about it. it is also unfortunate that people have been brainwashed to believe that animal testing is necessary. oftentimes, the results obtained from animals tests are inaccurate (due to the differences in anatomy, etc) and cause huge blunders that cost human lives when the drug is released onto the market...vioxx, phen-phen, etc. testing with models and computers is much more accurate. Drug companies have to conduct LD 50/50 tests...these figure out what the lethal dose of a drug is in 50 animals...i guess im lucky that my minnie was in the other 50...heres what you can do to help...yes, write your congressman, senator, etc...be exceptionally bothersome!! stop buying products tested on animals, proctor and gamble is a huge corporation that tests all of its products on animals...they make, tide, downy, tampax, joy, IAMS etc...stop buying products tested on animals. thats only one place to help out...another place to help, dont support charities who fund animal testing...ie march of dimes, etc. and stop the fraudulent science they perform on a daily basis...sorry for the rant, but saying its a shame isnt going to change anything...they need our help.
