I want to get a dog but me and my boyfriend disagree on what kind to get.
I have always wanted a Newfoundland. Well, at least for 5-6 years, since I first found out about them. No other dog has even came close to how much I love this breed. But I also like (but not as much) German Shepherds and Golden retrievers. However, these 3 breeds are heavy shedders, and my boyfriend hates dog hair. He also doesn't like big dogs around small children.. I have a 3 year old son. And we plan to have children together when we get married.. someday.
The problem is, I love these 3 breeds of dogs. And even though I like all dogs, no matter what the breed, I feel like I will never be truly satisified until I have one of those. But I know my bf doesn't like the hair.
does anyone have comments or suggestions that would help us?
I suppose getting a new bf is out of the question? ;) Darn near any dog is going to shed. Some will shed most of the year and some will only truly shed twice a year. You will have dog fur in the house. ( Chinese Crested hairless and Xoloitzcuintli - Mexican Hairless - excepted). Might want to rethink the children, they make a lot more mess than dog hair. (Somewhat poor attempt at humor - Sorry)

The 3 breeds are known to be great with children. And there are great breeders of Golden and GSD in my area not as close with a Newfie. With my bf. I'd probably have better luck convincing him of a golden or gsd than a newfi because of it's size Too bad they didn't have toy or mini newfies :)
Have you ever considered a Norwegian Elkhound? I met these dogs at a show at Tufts University, and they are so great. I wanted one right away! My son, who only slightly likes dogs, also fell in love with them. The breeder said they don't shed much at all. The have nice thick fur and are great with children.
I will not sell any of my Australian Shepherds pups to anyone that has kids younger then 12 years old.If I hear a child in the back ground I aways ask how old the child is.I get alot of people mad at me but I rather have them mad then one of my pups trying to heard them and the kid gets bit because it's doing there job (the dog). My aussie are from stong working lines.
Any of the breeds she is interested can be trained. The question is whether the bf can be trained (you know how men are) LOL. Seriously, I'd wait until you son is a little older. Raising a puppy takes a lot of attention and your son could learn jealousy too early. This is a common problem with young dogs and young children and it can work both ways - with one becoming jealous of the other - someone could be injured. Just something to consider.
Norwegian Elkhounds are FABULOUS, but they definitely ARE big shedders!! When they shed in warm weather their hair comes out in huge clumps....I remember my mom brushing our Elkhound and vacuuming constantly when I was a kid.
I may be wrong, but I think it's a Keeshound (not sure of the spelling), that looks like a small elkhound and may shed quite a bit less??
I have a GSD and I love her to death, she is great. I got her from the local kill shelter, and I have 7 kids in my house, they are ages 5 to 12, but when I got Star they were 3 to 10, she is great with them. I had GSD's when I was little too. GSD's are my fav dog and I havent had one yet that wasnt good with kids. When my niece or my nephew are outside with her, she licks them to death.
