I have a litter of puppies that are going to be 5 weeks in a few days. I have started them on puppy food mixed with water mushed up. I put them in the food their front paws and they don't do anything but walk away! I am worried. Sometimes they lick the water out, but I have never seen them eat any food. Am I doing something wrong? When do they start eating food not just licking up the extra water?
I start mine off when they are 3 1/2 to 4 weeks or when they start to want moms food.
Anyway I just give them mushed canned puppy food mixed with goats milk. which i supplement my puppies with the goats milk so i have some on hand.
anyway once they are eating that i then start to subtract the goats milk until it is just canned food. Then I start to add dry puppy food. The same as before once they seem to be eating the dry good then i start to add more dry and less wet until it is all dry.
good luck just make it tasty for them. also like the others have said make sure they are hungry. maybe give mom an hour brake from them and then try feeding them. Then put mom back in with them.
Yes please make sure you feed them CANNED puppy food preferably CAL CAN PUPPY, the dry dog food with water does nothing for them, plus doesnt smell strong enough to attract the puppies nose. I find CAL CAL PEDIGREE PUPPY is eaten up almost entirely by my 3 1/2 week old mini pins and they have no problems with finding it. I always sit there with it while they are eating taking their paws out of the food if they want it too badly teaching them even now not to step in their food. They are growing like weeds too! LOL!
we always use their dry puppy food, soaked to mush in hot water, mix in Kal Kan puppy food. start with it wetter at first and slowly progress to less ans less moisture. Then to the dry
all we even need to do is place it in front of them, and sometimes with our fingers, place a little in their mouths, they usually take to it right away. occasionally we have a slow poke that neds to watch the others a couple times and then will join in.
Like someone said, make sure they havnt nursed already or they wont be hungry
