My cocker is 9 years old and has some energy but cant go for walks more than half hour long. How much should I feed him?Hes 20 lbs over wiehgt? how much do you think should be his ideal weight?please help he needs to loose it as fast as he can(he has very bad arthritis)
There are medications for arthritic dogs that will help your cocker become more active. Ask your vet about them. The vet will also be able to tell you a reasonable weight for your dog (remembering that he's a senior) and how fast he should lose it.
I would cut out all treats, except for something like green beans. I first heard about the green beans for dogs on this forum and I thought it was just stupid, but I found out that lots of trainers recommend this. Again, check with your vet, he/she might have other ideas.
You should probably feed the dog three times a day, instead of once. Take up the food after 20 minutes, the dog should not be allowed to free feed.
Then you need to get your dog up and moving. Ten minutes in the morning, ten minutes in the afternoon and ten minutes in the evening should be plenty to start with. You can try longer walks on the weekends.
This will work but YOU MUST STICK WITH IT. This is pretty much what my doctor and my dog's vet told me to do. I am really overweight and the dog is getting older and we're worried about his losing muscle mass.
thanks so much Catdogmom!!!!I will ask my vet about the pills. There goes the rest of my allowence lol!Oh well hes worth it.when I got him from the shelter they said when he came in the first time he weighed 24 lbs but I dont know if that is what he should weigh since he alot bigger than my other cocker who wieghs 22lbs.He has food allergies do you think the green beans would affect him?thanks again
I've been using green beans with Kiba for awhile. I use the fresh ones as they dont have any additives that the canned has. Although you may want to ask your vet about this first as your dog is a senior. I just substituted some of her food for green beans, they're empty calories so they'll fill her up but not?
You should be measureing his food according to what his weight should be.And thats all he should be getting. All in all his exersise needs to increase.9 years old is not old.Its not a spring chicken but he should be getting min an hour in the morning and an hour in then evening. That means brisk walking, not slow, and allowing him to sniff around to much. Takeing him for a walk in the woods would keep him interested in the walk as well. Is he interested in leash free parks, some cockers are dog aggressive. Does he play fetch, 30 inutes of fetch is close to an hour of exercise. Give him treats that he can only chew on and not ingest. I can't tell you over this thread how much a dog should weight with out seeing his frame. But the normal range is about 25-35 lbs
I have tried to take him on long walks like you were sayin. but he gets very tired and just lays down.Im not sure if its because of his arthuritis or heart murmur or just cause hes out of shape.we tried the green beans today and he spit at me lol.figures he does that with everything thats good for him.lol I think he should weigh about 26lbs.im not sure.thanks everyone.
