I have used everyones ideas and tried feeding the puppies soft food and having the mom out of the puppy pen for a few hours so that they are hungry. They are 6 weeks old now. Today I put the mom out for the whole day. I did not let the puppies get to her so that they would eat the puppy food. Well they ate a very very very little. They refused to eat alot! Once mom got back to them they ran to her to nurse. I don't understand! I sit and put the puppy food on their mouth, put them by the food, sit and spoon some in their mouths and they still wont eat! They normally spit it out. Sometimes one will eat maybe a spoon amount, but that is it. I knew they were hungry when they got back to their mom they ran so fast to her they knocked the mom over!
When should I take the mom away from the puppies? I was going to wait till 8 weeks. My fiance thinks we should leave her away from them for good now since that would make them eat the puppy food then? If not that how about atleast all day and evening away from the mom so that they have to eat the puppy food?
We are really trying and have sat with these puppies for a good hour trying to feed them and they are just not wanting to eat! HELP!!

if the mother dog hasnt started trying to wean the pups on her own she has a reason-- if the pups arent eating puppy food ( canned or dry) they arent ready to be weaned-- every litter is different-- The last litter we had the mom didnt wean them until they were 12 weeks old-- her two litters prior to this she had weaned the first litter at 7 weeks and the second litter at 9.5 weeks. I say let em stay with mom unless there are health complications-- Mother knows best-- She will start to wean them on her own by growling and moving when they come to nurse-- that is when you should realyl start pushing puppy food-- It sounds to me like they arent ready to be weaned yet. Not every dog, nor breed of dog weans their pups at 6-8 weeks--
I wish you luck

I tried using formula mixed with wet food for a week and they really did not like that! That is when I posted and some people told me to buy this canned puppy food and microwave it for a little while to get it warm put it on their mouth and they should eat it. They like this stuff way more, but they just do not eat very much basically a few licks. Once they started eating more I was going to mix some hard food in that was sitting in water to make it mushy. Then after that I was going to put hard and soft mixed. Hope that makes sense.
Just double checking it really is ok to keep mom away from them for good now? Maybe just letting her show up to play with them when they are playing with all of my family? Should I not even let her be around them anymore?
At 6 weeks I would leave mom with pups at night, but not during the day. Try making food the consistency of oatmeal and put a small amount of raw ground beef or ground turkey in it. I don't raise dogs any more but I did for 15 years, and this is the way I always started the pups eating. I started feeding them at 3 weeks of age. Never had a problem with them not eating. Good luck.
Did you try putting store bought puppy formula over the dry food. Keep the mom away for longer periods of time they should be able to do without the mom by now. A lot of people start selling puppies at 6 weeks -- and they are eating fine. Maybe yu spoiled them too much....(like that is possible)
What breed of puppies are they? If they are a large breed and there are a lot (5 or more), they do not need to be eating off mom as their primary nutrition. By formula I assume you mean a puppy milk replacer. Maybe try mixing either wet or dy food with EVAPORATED milk- like the kind used for cooking, it is sweet and they will like it MIXED with whole plain or vanilla yogart. NOT condensed milk that is too rich and can make them sick.
Also I don't know what kind of puppyfood you use, but purina healthy morsels puppyfood in the blue bag has lots of different shapes, colors and flavors and mine over 3 weeks have never refused it. Also, have you wormed your puppies yet? If they have a tummy full of worms, coccidia, guardia they aren't going to have much of an appetite, maybe take a stool sample in for a fecal exam. That is generally the cheapest way to make sure there is nothing else going on. Good luck.
Hi thanks for caring so much! I put the mom out of the puppy area for the whole day normally around 6-9 in the morning till about 9-10 at night. Right when she gets into the puppy area they nurse right away. I thought she would push them off after awhile? I also thought that if you leave the mom with no food or water for 1 day that her milk will start to dry up? Well it has not! The puppies do try to eat her food. I am still mushing up the food with puppy milk. They seem to eat some of it. I did do half a plate with puppy mush food and the other half with just puppy food soaked in water so it was semi mushy. They seem to eat a little bit of both. When I take them out to play with them I bring the plate with me and they do eat some. I am not sure how much they should eat. Seems they eat I guess 25% dog food wait for the mom to come back and 75% milk from her. They do not have worms. They are all sold I was hoping they could go at 8 weeks, but I am not sure now. I told everyone 12 weeks. They weigh about 2lbs and are chihuahua's. They are totally healthy. Should I take the mom out for good now? Only bring her around to play with them? That is so far all the news for me.
hello sponge bob...I dont know about chi's at all...I have raised german short haired pointers in the past...and currently german shepherds and mini schnauzers...I would say to be on the safe side...call your vet...The pups I have had I introduced puppy food ( wet) at 3 weeks...they all begin to eat it and outside of 1 litter ( that one the mom stopped feeding them at 3 weeks) they all slowly begin eating...over time more and more...But...Please follow vets opionion on these small chi's...They are so darn small anything can happen...I usually get mine thourally vet checked at 6 weeks...so maybe take them in for a check and ask the vet...or at least call...my vet office almost knows my voice I call so much...thats what they are there for...To help...I dont think they are a breed that leaves Momma real quick...so at least 12 weeks sounds right...Good luck...
