does anyone have any experience with a broken femur? It's now 4 days after surgery, he's shown some improvement but has stopped using the leg again. I'm just not sure if I understand the expectations so soon after surgery - this could be normal but I'm really worried that it might not be.
Once had a dog who broke hers in the rear. Although they put in a titanium plate and screws and said the dog could walk on it right away with a cast she wouldn't... I guess there was still a little pain or just maybe she was afraid to walk on it so I took a new girth from a saddle and used it as a cradle under her belly to support her and she did just fine. She did start to walk on it on her own in a few days.
One important thing I remember them telling us is not to let her run or jump for about 6 or 8 weeks after. We had to keep her on a leash and restrict her movements to just walking for about 2 months..
It will probably take a minimum of 6-8 weeks for the bone to heal, however it may take longer for her to completely use it again. When I got my dog she had a broken hip. They did surgery but it took a good 6 months before she would put weight on the leg completely. Its been almost a year now and she's perfectly normal. You wouldn't know that anything ever happened to her. But, we had to restrict her activity for about 2 months, then we gradually increased to 30 minute walks twice a day...then we started doing hills to make her use the leg and some swimming. Hips and femurs are totally different, but you're still talking about a bone injury.Give it some time. They usually have a pretty successful recovery rate.
