Last night, I took two of my younger cousins to the Westminster Mall. I wanted to go into the pet store there just to look at the puppies. I am so sorry that I did. First of all, as you approach the pet store, within about 20 feet, it wreaks of pee and poo. Then I walked in, and started to look at puppies. I have a 15 pound Lhasa Apso. His crate is big enough for him to lay down comfortably and turn around, and has enough room for a dog toy and blanket. This pet store had at least 3 dogs to each of their glass boxes that were about as big as my dog's crate, in some cases four. Then, they had a 4 1/2 month old Golden Retriever puppy, that was pretty big, in a glass box that was maybe 3x2x3 feet. He would try to jump up and bonk his head. The poor thing. Then, I found four little Lhasa Apso pups. Now my little guy is the cutest thing ever! These things were ugly. Normally, I love puppies. But these dogs were in such bad shape, their teeth stuck out and came to a point and their noses were sunken way back in their face. The only cute puppy they had was a tiny little pug, that I highly doubt was as old as they say it was. He was about the size of a guinea pig. Oh, and then my cousin pointed out to me a couple of rabbits in glass boxes that were meant for A hamster. The full size rabbits could not move, they were sitting in their own poo. I don't even know how they got air, one of the glass boxes was all steamed up from the rabbits breathing, which I would think would mean that there was a lack of oxygen. They even had about 8 hermit crabs in one of those plastic boxes that you would usually keep just one.
Then I went up to the front where my cousin was playing with some puppies that were in the top open glass pens. They were right behind the cash register. This may be the worst part of all. Down, behind the cash register and well below eye level (maybe knee level) was a sign that said something to the effect of, "Pedigree certificate does not guarantee proper breeding practices, health, temperament and something else..." That is one hell of a disclaimer. I was so sad and disgusted, and I'm sure all of the workers and customers heard about it from me and my cousins. Does anyone know if there is anything I can do? This store is wrong in so many ways.
They can "get away with it" because people continue to buy puppies there, puppymills are allowed to flourish in this country, there is no meaningful regulation of these stores on any level (state, local, national), and people today want instant gratification. They don't want to wait to go through the steps required to apply through a rescue or shelter, or become offended when responsible breeders ask a lot of questions or charge a decent price for a puppy. Want to close petstores? DON'T SHOP THERE!
There are laws however on cage size requirements. Contact your local US Dept. Of Agriculture! Contact your local media! Make a stance & let it be known that what they are doing is illegal & will not be tolerated.
The best way to stop this is to take action. There are several groups in my area who are lobbying our state legislature to impose serious restrictions on Pet stores. Try getting something together in your state!
The pet store in my mall (Boise, Idaho) has had a lot of complaints on how they are taking care of the animals...people kept calling the humane society on them complaining.
The humane society finally came to check them out, they found things wrong with the place (obviously!) and they gave them a day to fix it or they would close them down. I of course was hoping they'd close them down but the stupid pet store fixed it in the amount of time given to them and they are still open.
I hate that pet store, I still see things wrong with it but not enough things for them to be shut down.
I saw it on my local news and one of the people working there came running out of the pet store and started threatening the camra people, screaming in their faces, and trying to push at the camra. Another employee had to practically drag him back into the store before he got the cops called on him.
Anyway, I think you should call your local humane society. If enough people call and complain they should come and check it out. They may be able to shut them down. If not, you could always keep trying and it lets the humane society know to keep checking on that pet store.
Good luck! Maybe one day my local pet store will be shut down.
Although this may sound silly, we've had good results with protests in front of pet stores. (May be difficult in mall because it is private property, but try it). You can make posters with pics of dogs in puppy mills (which is where almost 95% of puppies from pet stores come from). Also, notify the local news stations and they will make sure to be there.
So far, two pet stores have had to shut down after such publicity. Give it a try!
The pet store is called Indogneato in Westminster, CA. I went to their website today where I found their statement that they adhere to the highest standards of health and care for their pets! Yeah right! They have other stores in Brea and Mission Viejo (I think they just bought the Mission Viejo store cuz it was called something else before). I've never been to the Brea one (I don't think, I hate that mall), but the one in Mission Viejo is really nice, and the last time I was there it was really clean...but also really expensive. I got my pup from a mom n pop pet store in Laguna Beach. I have a full health guarantee for a year, and I get free stuff everytime I bring Merphy in to visit. The owners of that store are great, and take very good care of the dogs they are selling. They also sell them for cheap, about 1/4 what Indogneato charges, and their prices on supplies are cheaper than PetSmart and PetCo. One of the owners, Paul, stands guard over the puppies to make sure that they are not mistreated by customers and their vet is there at least twice a week. Merphy has his issues, but I am satisfied with my purchase. Sorry to get off track, but I don't think ALL puppy stores are bad.
Anyway, I will be contacting all the suggested places tomorrow. I normally just let places be, but this was horrible and I can't sleep with myself knowing that I did nothing...hmm, maybe that's why Merphy slept on the floor last night!
