My miniature shih tzu went outside this evening and came in with a bunch of burs stuck in her fur. I have tried to google how to get them out and couldn't find the answer. Can anyone out there help me?
First, there is no such thing as miniature shih tzu. You have a shih tzu. Ok now that I have gotten that off my chest on to the burs. Unfortunately, it's going to be a lot of work. You have to pick them out one at a time. If it's in there really good you will have to cut them out. Don't worry your dog's hair will grow back in no time at all.
Never heard of a miniature Shih tzu, what is it mixed with? Shih tzus are a lot of work, as you are finding out, if you want to keep them in full coat. My 2 smaller dogs, one is a Japanese Chin and the other a Shih tzu, got into a burdock patch this fall and came back into the house full of burdocks in their tails and fur.
You just have to work at the burdocks with your grooming tools, combs, brushes, ect. Don't leave them in the coat too long or you will have a big mess when you finally remove them. It will look as if they had a bad home perm in their tails. :D
If your dog is too badly matted with burdocks, you should take her to the groomers, maybe consider having her coat trimmed shorter.
Also, go outside and remove the burdock plant, by the roots, from your yard. Otherwise you will keep having that trouble, since they grow like a proverbial weeds.
Do you have any pictures of your Shih tzu? How old is she, tell us more about her. Who told you she was a miniature Shih tzu? Did you get her from a petshop? Some of them are notorious for creating names for their mixes, as a marketing tool.
I have the same problem with my Maltipoo. She also gets foxtails. As soon as I get home from work I check her fur and clean her up. They get thing in there fur because they are so close to the ground. If you take them out right away they come right off. I keep Mia brushed so she wont get matted and to remove foreign object from her coat.
