I have three pom/mix puppies and we're tryign to lay down a good base for behaved dogs and I find it is hard to reinforce commands when they are constantly provoking eachother. I would love to hear from someone who has experience with several dogs at once and keeping them in line. Thanks to an article that redryrotties posted about potty with snacks I have found they are more than willing to pee and poo when I have a baggie of mozzarella cheese bits. Three issues I'd like very much to address with them are puppy barks (the ones right in your ear while they are mauling your face with front paws). Your very much already paying them attention but they see fit to bark and scratch you all over. I know to ignore their barks when we are in another room, or when they are watching us but we are busy, so I don't know whether we should correct the behavior when we are WITH them in the kitchen(play time or cooking)!! Secondly, niping of eachother and myself and 2yr old. I am not sure whether to tap noses or just say "no" or "no biting" or close their mouth manually?! I want them to know they are farther down the food chain in our household and that biting (even play biting) is a "No go". Thirdly, the jumping up on baby gates and on our legs and attempting to jump onto my daughter when she visits them in the kitchen (where they live for now).
I am home all day and everyday so I have time to devote to any training suggestions that you KNOW will work. I don't want to scare them and make them skitish but they need boundaires too. Any HELP (criticism need not apply) is SO appreciated.
they really need some good walks everyday. With the jumping tell them "off" and push them off. With the biting, they are puppies and it is okay for them to bite eachother but not your family.I dont recommend shutting their mouths manually. Most dogs just go crfazy and get even madder at the person and want to bite evn more. You can try pinching their lip and telling them NO BITE. tapping on the nose sometimes dont work either because they think you are play (to much movement). Also put some bitter apple on your hands or vinagar works even better. When jumping also you can put them on a leash and tell them OFF and set them back on the floor, when all feet are on the ground tell them good dog or their name and pet them. With the barking get a small bottle of vinagar and spray it right in their mouth. Im not sure of your opions on training but i have tried others and these work the fastest for me.When they are old enough enroll them in puppy kindergarten. You do need to seperate them sometimes.
I have 4 dogs and one is in all the time then we alternate the 3 at different times, they all go on walks and they are all trained like I metioned and are great dogs.they know their is a time to play and a time not to play, they still play with each other, growling, biting, snarling, chasing the whole nine yards.but they always know that they can bite, jump, chase or any stuff with us.
Cocker lover, I would love to walk them a on walks. The only problem is with those three and my two year old it makes it impossible to walk all three by themselves, let alone together. I let them run around on back patio to get out engery the down fall for that is that they go pee and poo out there so if I miss them doing it I miss an oportunity to praise them and help with the potty training, PLUS they roll in their pee and step in poo and I have had to limit outside time to 15 minutes every hour or every other hour. About the vinegar what kind of vinegar and if they get it in their eyes wont it burn? They are small dogs with little faces and everything is close by. Do I sit on the floor next to the baby gates and just spray away when they start or do you think I should get into the kitchen with them and only do it when I'm with them?
I suppose I could walk them one by one with daughter/stroller. Thank you for your help.
Just use plain white vinagar. yes it will burn their eyes but not as much as pepper spray. lol I would never use that. anyway the sit at the gate a spray their face try to get it in the mouth more than anything. 2 of my dogs have small faces to but they learned in 3 days to quit barking. Spray it anytime they start to whine to much or anytime they bark, they need to learn some manners.they will learn fast to.Im sure it wont take long for them to learn not to bark, you will eventually be able to set the bottle in front of their gate and they will not bark.If they do then go in there and pick up the bottle and they will probably turn theri head and shut up.Thats what you want!! if they roll in their poop and pee you may want to start taking them out on leashes,or just let one or two out at a time.I would really try to take them on a walk with your kid one at a time,im sure you will see a big difference in how they act.
remeber for a balanced dog: they need Exersize, dispiline,THEN affection. all in that order. They displine just means boundries, rule and limitations.Good Luck if you need anything else let me know.
Some good tips, think I'll try some on Cody when he gets to barking too much or jumping. I just have one question, "What possessed you to get three pups at once?" I can not imagine having three pups and a young child at the same time. Have you had pups before or is this your first time? I see nothing wrong with this, just curious. I know how much time one pup takes so I can only imagine with three. I had one pup and two young children at once and that was enough. Good luck to you.
Cody'smom, Long story short :) We went to get two sisters to replace the void in our household of our pom and my mother-in-law wanted the third so we got hers too and then she backed out. No, I have never had three puppies at once before. I find it a lot to be like the early stages of mother hood all over again. Sleepless nights...lots of poo and pee. Auto pilot at three a.m. Ha ha. I am just really trying to convert them to our family's sleeping, eating, schedule etc.. before they are resented (which is easy when others feel neglected i.e. husband!). They were out door dogs though so they went (poo/pee) wherever and had no food schedule and barked continuiously. So you see I am having to re-learn everything myself so we are all on the same page. if you'd like to know more I have a WHOLE post commited to the circumstances of these dogs. I think's the title is three pom mix puppies HELP! It was quite interesting when everyone heard about me and what we're doing.

Cocker lover, Oh my gosh you're me hero!! My husband brought home the vinegar at around four p.m. today and this house hasn't been this quiet in TWO WEEKS!!!! Thank you so much! Now I'm just checking here, but is it normal for them to look at you like you're the DEVIL? The littles one (LOUDEST one) shrinks back into the opposite side of the kitchen from me and looks at me like I'm killing her. But it IS working!! Now I only let them bark if they are all playing semi-quietly.
Do they ever stop looking at you like you're the devil? I've found that since we started spraying with the vinegar that they also listen more about not jumping on daughter and not trying to climb baby gates in kitchen. I think I may have established that I'M the boss, wow! Do you have to use the bottle forever once you have implemented it into the training? Thanks again. I really appreciate your help, pease keep in touch!
P.S. we took them each on their own walk today and it went very well. each got a 10-13 minute walk and they took a huge nap so now I need to make it later during the day and hopefully it will help them sleep better too!

They eventually will quit looking at you like that. That is a good thing right now. When they atrat to get better with no barking thne you can just pick up the bottle and tell them quiet then after they know not to bark to that then you can just set it i front of their gate, then after they dont bark at all remove the bottle.they may need reminders sometimes but thats that OK. Im glad the walk went well. With them giving you that look that means they have given up and are learning that it is very rude to bark when it uneccesary.
o also wanted to add what my trainer always says if we step on them or correct them wrong or anything else. she says "dogs are not human, they are very forgiving"
if you need anything else just ask.Your a very good mommy for wanting to do better, alot of people would have just taken them back, becuase theya re acting like puppies.

Cocker Lover, Last night we got five hours of sleep in a row! Before yesterday you could hear puppies squealing from our driveway and now you'd never know they're even here!!! Sophie still gets a bit mouthy if we take one of her sisters for a walk without her though, but it's progress! I was a bit skeptical when you said three days or less. It's only been a day and a half! I just pick up the bottle and they know! The only downside is that they stink like vinegar and I'm not supposed to wash them because their advantage is water based so it'd wash right off.
We had walks today again! It went well, much drier and warmer. The funny thing is they all pee'd in the same spot each different walk. Now they have their spot on the loop. You have any hints on how to keep their teeth off their leash/harness? They all want to mouth it or tug on it. I usually tug back a little and say "off" but it's NOT working. They think I'm playing maybe. Do you know how to load pictres? I'd like to show you the gals you've helped. Thanks again, Michelle

With the leash "No" and "Drop It" pull it right out of their mouth either with your hand or pull it out of there mouth fairly hard. They wont like somthing getting pulled out of their mouth that hard. If this dont wokr dip the leash in Vinagar or some bitter apple stuff you can get at the petstore. with them smelling so bad,you can get Dry Shampoo form the pet store the spray works the best not the wet towls.....they are just big baby wipes, but they still dont work near as good as the spray does.
