I heard that vets can do a pregnancy test now. I can see it in mine when they are right about 1 month pregnant. But they are small breed and I know every inch of their body like the back of my hand so I quickly notice a slight tummy difference and everybody is kept on a strict diet and at a specific weight (they're doxies, so I have to be very careful in that area!) so I know it's not just weight gain. I have an american bulldog too. Absolutely great boy! Great attitude, considering he has to live in a house with a bunch of sassy doxies!
I hate to be the one to ask this but being an owner of an American Bulldog I have to. Have you had her health tested and her hips tested? Same with the sire? American Bulldogs are very prone to hip problems and skin allgeries. Beings they are passed from the bitch and sire it's better to breed when both parents are healthy.
Also I don't even think it is possible for her to even be showing since it's only been 2 weeks.
You can not generally palpate puppies in a bitch until 25-30 days. They feel like marbles all in a line or along a string (the uterus) After about 35-45 days they elongate and just feel full. You cannot count or differenciate between fetus' At about 5 or 6 weeks you should know. The vulva of a pregnant bitch will stay soft rather than shrink back up to pre-estrus size. She will have hard pink nipples and will appear fuller in her belly area. Sometimes I find my bitches will throw up at about 3-4 weeks like morning sickness. WE start feeding puppy food at 30 days PG and feed 2 times per day until about 5 or 6 weeks when they are getting bigger then feed 3 x a day but, don't increase the food too drastic. DO NOT give suppliments unless your vet advises it. Calcium is definately NOT a suppliment to give a pregnant bitch.
I took my dog to the vet this morning. she told me it's to soon to feel for puppies. she recommended starting her on pet-tabs twice a day. she is almost six years old and has never been pregnant. she has no hip problems and no allergies whats so ever. she is an extremely healthy dog. i have started her on puppy food twice daily and her vulva does still look swollen a bit. her nipples do look pointed and hard. her belly is getting a little bigger. the vet said she feels like her milk glands are slightly enlarged also.
gg...i dont have american bulldogs...but i do have shepherds and mini schnauzers...no 2 shepherds carry the same way..one of my girls you cant till she is pregnant till about 7 weeks....and she carrys low and far back..the other...she seems to gain weight as soon as she gets bred...and she carries all over..she looks like an over stuffed sausage..
and I know stormy asked about health issues..you stated your dog has no hip or allergy problems..it is different to get a OKA or xray that certifies healthy hips then just saying nothing is wrong with the hips..not trying to be difficult or condesending...im just a concerned animal lover....
Just because she is "healthy" doesn't mean she doesn't have a slight case of HD. My American Bulldog seemed to ahve no allergies at all until one day she broke out with a bad case of Poison Ivy. Most dogs are NOT allergic to poison ivy. Neither of Storm's parents had HD and both we OFA certified. Storm does have HD in both hips, but not to the point of where she will need surgery. She seemed "healthy" until an X-ray was done, when I was getting all the testing done to see if she was fit to breed.
Plus you say she is 6?? Thats a little old for her first litter or to be breeding period.
I do appreciate all of your opions and suggestions. My brother actually has the male that I bred her with. My dog definately does not have any hd at all. She has no allergies what so ever to anything. The only reason I decieded to breed her was bc my brothers dog and my dog have the same temperment. We wanted another am. bulldog just like ours so we decieded to breed them for our families only. we have a large family and a lot of them want a puppy. we didn't do it to make money.
