I find it kind of hard when people who get these dogs and think theyr'e supose to act like humans. thats a dog nature.. to DIG! my little chi started to dig in a spot i didn't want him to. so what i did i took plastic and lay it over it and kept spraying the no go spot solutionfor pets . i brought it at pet co hopefully the little stinker wont go digging once i take the plastic off, so far he runs pass it . he he he.
this is real odd but it workd. My brother in law has 2 large dogs and one used to keep digging under the fence. Well he was sick of burring the hole and one day as he was trying to burry it she was trying to dig it back out so he put her butt in the hole and burryed her were she couldnt get out (just her back end) finaly she gave him a sad look so he dug her out and she has not dung under the fence sence.
I brought teacup boots at petco. it came with his xmas suit . at first he didn't like wearning them but when the snow came & the ground was cold, shucks he almost put it paw out and couldn't wait for me to put them on . once they wear them a couple of times he or she will get use to them you'll think teacup is a model the way he struts in his shoes he.he. he.
We made a really nice play yard for the doxies but I could see that the nice yard wasn't going to last long because of their digging. So we went out and bought 2 if those Little Tykes sand boxes for children, put them in the play yard and filled them all the way up with sand. They love it. Sometimes I burry a few new toys in it and they go nuts. When it gets low from their slinging some of it out, add a new bag. It's cheap. For bigger dogs you would probably have to build one that was deeper. Build the walls and sink it into the ground, then fill it up. It wouldn't need a bottom. I think it's easier to teach them where they are allowed to dig, than trying to teach them NOT to dig. * If you have cats in your area, cover it when it is not in use!
When any of my guys dig I take their doggie doo and put it in the holes. When then go back to dig its something they don't want to put their feet in again... Takes a few holes but they do quit making new holes soon.
there are several reasons dogs dig. Might be because it is bored. Maybe they could create a place for digging in their yard. That would be the best thing for the dog. Many dogs have a very real need to dig and being restricted from it could harm their well being in some way.
My samoyed digs too but not like a big pit near a fence or anything like that. We have 10 acres so he has plenty of room to run. He digs when my girls are outside playing.. he digs and throws the dirt up and tries to catch it. He can do this for ours. He digs and yelps when he tries to catch the dirt. Its something about my girls playing outsied that makes him dig like that..its like hes playing his own little game. Its a mess because we have pit holes all over the front of our house and all around it. I wish he would go to the other end of the property to dig his pits :) I like the idea of putting his poops in the pits, maybe that will stop it...
