how do i get him to sit on the passenger seat and not my lap

He is a really cuddly dog in the car, and just wants to sit on my lap. I think he'd be totally miserable in the back of my suv, so is there a way I can get him to stay over on the other seat next to me? He's getting bigger and getting under the steering wheel, and it's not safe at all. Also, any ideas on how to get him to swallow an antibiotic pill? I've given him 2, and it's a nightmare. He has diarrhea, and the stool sample was negative for worms, so the vet just gave me the antibiotic, and told me to add rice to the food. Today, I coated the pill in peanut butter, and the pill came out of his mouth numerous times, then I just kept shoving it back in, and I think he got it.

They have carseats for dogs that you can buy, or you can just rig someway to fasten him to that side of the car until he learns to sit on that side.
To give him a pill, if he won't take it in cheese or some other food, you have to hold his mouth open and put the pill on the back of his mouth, hold his mouth shut and rub his throat until he swallows. I have always had good luck if I wrap the pill in cheese.

They actually have out a harness which allows the seat belt to clip on to or go through the loop in the back of the harness,it will keep your dog in the seat of the car. I use it for my dogs.For pills ,I put Peanut Butter on bread ,and wrap the pill in the bread with the Peatnut Butter.

A harness (doggie car seat) is fine but, for the most part I feel a dog is safer traveling in a solid well built crate. Even though the dog may complain a bit its safer for all concerned including the driver of the car. If you were to make a sudden stop your dog could very well hit the windshield of your car. Also, some dogs become car sick and cleaning up vomit in a crate is much preferred than having it all over the place. ;-)

I would try a harness
In the past I've used cheese to get dogs to swallow pills

Like everyone else said their is a dog harness that straps into the seat belt. That is one of the safest ways to travel.
But in the next while if you can't pick one up anytime soon I would suggest just keep shoving him over. You don't want to have a car accident because the dog is under your feet. Hold him on the other side if he keeps trying to be on your lap. Pet him when he's on the other side and keep removing him from your lap. Eventually he will get the idea because he will dislike being moved so much that he will just stay. (Practice this with out actually driving a few times before you actually drive with him again).
As for the pill what I do is I open the top of my dogs mouth and pressing his lips on to his top teeth (gently but so he knows they are there) then I place the pill on the back of his toung (please don't throw it down his throat, that's so cruel) close his mouth with his top lips still over his teeth hold his mouth closed and tilt his head back for 3 seconds. Rub his throat at the same time. I did this with my Akita when he got beaver fever and I never had a problem. I had to give him 2 pills twice a day and he never objected to having that done twice in a row.

PetSmart has a seatbelt for dogs that is adjustable and is used with a harnes, it is just a strap with two clips on one end so it fits most cars.. i have one for Cody and I make it short enough so that he can not go falling off the seat if I have to make a sudden stop but yet he can move around a little on HIS side of the seat. He can move a little and still see out of the window. Cody is 1-1/2 year old Bichon Frise/Westie mix. he too likes to be close to me when I drive and with this on he still can but he can not sit on my lap. He either puts his front paws on the console or he lays his head on it, that way I can stroke him when I can and he is a happy camper. Good luck.

I really didn't mean to be cruel; I'm a first time dog owner, and I just really needed him to get that pill. I've had him since november 5th, and it's been so hard. Believe me, he's really spoiled--I'm neglecting so many other things in my life since I've had him. I'm a stay at home mom of a 14 yr. old and 11 yr. old--he gets boiled chicken on his kibble or he won't eat it(I know if I stick it out and he gets hungry enough maybe he would eat, but it's so hard when he stands at the counter and barks when there's no chicken on his kibble). Every time I either drive the kids to school or pick them up, he's right on my lap, and I'm constantly sitting on the kitchen floor with him throwing a toy. I also have bells on my sliding door, and he rings them constantly--lots of times when he doesn't have to potty. He had terrible reactions to the lyme vaccine also--extreme pain for 2 days. I couldn't pick him up without ear piercing cries.

We use the seatbelt harness to fasten our guys in...but they are always in the backseat. If you have him in the passenger seat and got into an accident, the air bag could injure him.

Ebay has a harness a with a short belt that fit to the latch of your car seat belt. It keep them in the seat. I bought a counsole car seat for my dog and I use the harness to keep her latched in.

The first way we attempt pills is to hide it in a treat for him. Sometimes they are just too smart and stubborn and spit the pill out. If he does you'll have to go the harder way. Put the pill in a wad of butter/margarine, open his mouth placing the pill at the back of his throat, hold his mouth shut with one hand, rub his throat in a downward motion with the other, also blowing at his nose will cause him to swallow as a reaction.

With the car, I agree at very least use the harness. I will not allow mine to ride without a crate or some other form of restraint. Not only is it dangerous when the dog jumps or climbs on you, but I cant tell you how many pets I have seen killed from being ejected from the car. It only needs to be a fender bender for enough momentum to throw a small dog through the windshield.

Some states, I believe PA is one, have a law in place requiring pets to be restrained at all time also.

Try practiceing before hand without pills. Have two balls of peanutbutter, offer the first one and show him the next one while hes eating the first. Most dogs will hurry with the first one to get the second. And if you practice before hand without and pills, he might come to trust that theres nothing inside. I use white bread, I take a small circle of the white part and cut it out, wrap up the pill, and squeeze the bread, it should become doughy. I would use wonder.
The seat part is easy, just buy him a seat belt or a harness would work just slip the seat belt through it.

well our dogs eat whatever they can get their paws on so, we just drop it in their food with some rice or something special, or i just wrap it ina piece of ham or cheese

lol sue, I do the same thing! I didnt hink to mention it though. I always have two pieces of whatever I'm using, hand them the pill loaded one first while I hold the second one in front of them, they gulp to get the next piece.

Wow! I wanted to ask the same question. i started out with him riding in a car seat.but it didn't last to long he too wants to ride on my lap which is a very bad mistake . the only reason this happen was b/c everytime i got in the car going somewhere a human was always with me or i had to pick someone up. the car seat i brought at petco could only be use for my front seats its for bucket seats. i couldnt use it on the back seat no where to hang it.

whatever you hid it in, do a litte training before it...like, heres this pill coated in cheese....sit! down! good dog! give the 'treat" he'll never know :)

marge - I know you want to have your puppy close to you, but seriously consider a crate or barrier restraint for the BACK of your SUV. Not only could your baby be thrown through the windshield in a serious accident, but a simple fender bender could kill him if your airbags deploy. Havanese are not a very large dog and the force behind an airbag is extremely dangerous to children and even smaller adults. I don't even want to think about what could happen to my sibes if they weren't secure in the back seat. As for pills, I just shove them on down. If I have any problem, Peanut butter and/or cheese are always a good helper.
