I have two Poms and I also swore I wouldn't own one because of their yipping, but I love them dearly. Yes, mine bark alot, but with constant training they are getting better. They do bark when they are playing with one another and if someone comes to the door, they bark, but they are getting better.
My mom recently adopted an adult pomeranian from a shelter, and she actually wishes he would bark more! She lives in the city, and wants the dog to alert her if someone is outside. Sometimes he does, but usually, he doesn't!
I have three and they only bark when a stranger knocks. I have never found a pom to be yappy although that is all i ever heard abotu them. I suppose it is in their nature but with good training it can be reduced and nearly eliminated. It is surely not a reason to avoid buying one unless you plan on not bothering to train it.
I am planning on getting one, but my fiance works second shift and comes home when I am already in bed. I dont really want to wake up every night because of barking. How would i train him not to bark though?
I had a pom for 10 yrs and she never barked unless it stormed or someone knocked on the door. I now have 2 more Poms that are a year old and the only time the boy barks is when someone pulls in the driveway and the girl will then bark at him. She also does little barks when they are playing. If they start to bark when someone pulls in, we just say "No" and they stop.
All the poms I have met love to bark. I think most poms love to bark so maybe you should consider a different breed. I think all dogs bark when someone enters their home so I don't see how you can get around that. But I do know that some are yappier than others.
My mother had a pom who would bark all the time, and at every little noise or person. But I read that in the description for poms that they do bark a lot and you have to train them to stop barking so much. Barking at first, but then to stop, my Mothers would just bark constantly. I have a pomapoo and she barks at noises and people but only for a few seconds.
None of mine were really barkers, they would bark alot when you got them all riled up and were playing with them and they would also bark when they saw someone walking another dog, but all my dogs do that. lol I think that in searching for a Pomeranian that might bark less, you will want to look at the parents and also any other dogs that they live with. I believe it is a learned behaviour. It can also be taught through obedience training to help control obsessive barking.
