Is there anyone out there that has had a cat (or dog) with ringworm? Our 8mo. male cat, Cleo, has ringworm; we took him to the vet, he's on medicine, but it's just gross... The little I know about it is that it's a fungus, it can cause 'sores' on their skin, and it takes a while to heal, etc. Does anyone out there have advice on how to handle it or what they did when their pet had it? thanks!
Ringworm is very contagious. Do not cuddle kitty until the lesions are healed, and either wash your hands thoroughly or wear rubber gloves when putting on ointment. If you have children you will have to deal with a lot less aggravation if they do not handle the cat until the lesions are gone.
You will know if you have gotten too close, ringworm itches like mad and just keeps growing until treated. It appears as a roughly round raised welt.
On some of the farms I worked on the replacement calves would get it over the winter from scratching on the fence posts where the it's predecessors had scratched. If one had it they all had it. In a real bad year you would see it in the adult stock. Horses can be affected as well as dogs.
Sadly I got the last posting right after I found a spot of ringworm on myself... but thank you for the input. It's soooo annoying and gross!! Do we really need to go to the extremes of vacuuming 8x a day and cleaning and bleaching everything in our house to get rid of the fungus??? I don't wish this upon anyone, it really sucks to deal with... sorry to be complaining...
Those little buggers can be very irritating. My little sister had a cat, unbenonced to us, it had those. It gave them to people in the family. They are SO HARD to get rid off. Antibiotic ointment, is what we used. Antifungal type stuff. Sadly... Jockitch/athletes foot etc etc... the ointment for that type of stuff works really well.
Many years ago, I shaved a cat into a lion clip, a few days later, the cat was diagnosed with ringworm (Yay!) And guess who had it on their arms, yes, me. So any ways, I used the cream from the vets, on my arms, probly over several weeks and it went away. It should just be a roundish, reddish type of rash, its not actually a worm.
