Good morning all. I have a question about having Fred(4month old Maltese) groomed. I've called several groomers that friends recommended and was told they at the moment are not taking any new clients. So I figured as a last resort until someone will take him I'll go to Petsmart- (there's one right by my house and I've taken another dog that I had there) The woman told me they have a "puppy package" that includes the basics-shampoo, nails and hair trim but she told me that it also includes a face, tail and paw sanitizing thing. Has anyone ever heard of this? What is this?!
I was so disgusted with this girls attitude that I didn't want to go into depth with her about it. I've decided to hold of taking him(especcially there) until I can find someone else.
Personally, I wouldn't bring my dog back to Petsmart to be groomed ever again. I did the puppy package with Riley. He looked beautiful but he was a miserable boy. They told me they'd take him out to go potty (because puppies have to go out often, and he had to stay there for 4-5hrs). Well they NEVER took him out to go potty because when I took him he peed through the entire store and as soon as we walked outside he couldn't even hold his poop in. I was pissed.
But that is just the Petsmart here, it could be different by you. But really, I'd rather support local business.
I wouldnt ever take my dogs there.Im a dog groomer and I tell you there grooming is just as bad as there training. They have always had a snotty attitude with me.The one up here shaved the dog so fast I know it had got razor burn and she hit this bigger dog with the brush because it was wiggling! I would just wait to have him groomed.

I know the ones around here (Dayton, OH, Richmond, IN) wanted about $200 each for my Newfs, one was 6 months, the other 10 months. When I asked why, they said they charge by breed, not necessarily size. I said, "good enough," and went to a local groomer by my parents' house. They were done wonderfully, smelled great, stayed there most of the day and played (this place was small, but very friendly!), and it only cost $75.00 for BOTH of them! Plus, I got to spend the day with my mom and younger siblings.
the price wasn't too bad-- it was $15 for the puppy package and when I said that I wanted him puppy cut they said that it was an additional $42 but they would give a discount because he was a first time customer...
I know I sound silly but I'm so scared to take him to a groomer... he can't tell me if they mistreated him or hurt him. i feel bad leaving him there. I called a lady that has a mobile grooming thing and she charges $75 everytime. I think that's a little too much considering I'll need him groomed every month or so.
You dont sound silly! Haha If you take him just stay and watch.
Groomer,I groom at home.I have been grooming for 2 years going on three and Im getting ready to get employed at a palce called all american grooming part time on saturdays.Since Im under age I cant work more than a few hours a week.
Colliemom, The groomer that was recommended(highly!) by the vet was also recommended by a friend-is not taking any new clients. i left a message with her to call me to tell me when she's planning on taking on new people. i hate to drop names but i did because my friend told her i was planning on taking him to her. so hopefully she will call.
I had took Kaiya my rottie to petsmart to be groomed, they asked me before I left if the clipper length they had onfile was still correct. Umm, NO. Never had her hair shaved let alone there. I'm glad they said somthing before I left or she may have been bald, needless to say she never goes to petstore grooming places anymore. She goes to her good old home town grooming shop.
If you just keep looking there is bound to be an individual groomer you could go too. I worked as a groomer several years ago and now just do my own dogs, but let me tell ya, you are going to regret taking her(him) to Petsmart or Petco. If I were you I would get a grooming book and equipment and do it myself before I would go there. Believe me, from what I have seen, you could practice and your dog would not look worse than if you went there. I sure don't care for how they treat some of their customers either.
Fredsmom... where do you live? Maybe if we knew, someone on here can refer you to a good groomer around their area.
Personally I've taken my shih tzu, Riley, to both Petsmart and a professional groomer. The first time I took Riley to the groomers, it was to Petsmart. They did a decent job there, but they didn't do too much to him. The way his hair grew out after that wasn't too appealing either. Oh and he must have had an allergic reaction cause he kept rubbing his eyes that night. The second time I called them, I told them I wanted them to give him a trim on his body, but the girls there said he was too young. I found out later that that was not true and that they should start young so they get used to the grooming. He was about 3 months at the time. I think the groomers at Petsmart were either not trained well enough to give him a proper haircut or they just didn't want to deal with a puppy.
After taking Riley out shopping one day at an outdoor mall (this place is like a dog show on the weekends!), I bumped into a lady with four shih tzus and I loved the way they were groomed. I got the referral from her and took Riley there for his grooming. I gave him a puppy cut and he looks so amazing! The price is definitely alot more, but it's worth every penny.
So moral of the story... don't go to Petsmart if you really want a nice haircut. Best way to find a good groomer is to spot a dog that you like the way he is groomed, and ask the owner for a referral. Malteses are alot like shih tzus when it comes to grooming. Might as well pay a bit more to get an awesome haircut that will last.
I guess I am the odd one out, that Koda has always had good luck at the Petsmart that we go to. We have tried other groomers and have never had a bad groom job from Petsmart, Koda always looks great and is very happy.
I just had my puppy in to petsmarts vet for shots and the lady that was in the salon seen us walking out and came out and chatted with me and said she could cut away the brown tear stains around his eyes and she said they would do it for free, i thought that was very nice and they did a super job> I didnt think bentley would let them do it but he was alot calmer for them then when we try at home. Bentley is a bichi-poo and hes white and gets those nasty tear stains and ive tried cutting them out and washing his face and it was ok but i just thought it was very nice of this girl to come out from the petsmart salon and offer to do this for him. I made a appt for this saturday and im taking him in for the puppy package and i do hope it goes as well as the little trim they did for him. But oh does he look handsome! There are always many dogs in the salon at our petsmart. MI Im sure that all petsmarts are differnt, and it depends if you get some one who likes their job or is there for a pay check. To me thats a big differnce. theresa
The clinic I worked for got a lot of dogs kicked out of petsmart. Around here if the dog wasen't quick and easy they asked you not to come back.
Every time I go into petsmart they ask me if I brind the Afghans there or who grooms them. I tell them I do and they are always shocked. It makes me roll my eyes, and I have critiqued a dog they just groomed out loud more hten once. I can't stand hula skirts and clumps of missed hair, have some pride.
I asked my friend to appretence me and spent two years learning the fine details of grooming beyond the basics that I knew from the breeds that I had worked with and shown. She has a ton of pride in her work and spcalizes in terriers, so I feel I aquired a good education from her and I also take pride in my grooming. The few clients I do have are mostly local people with coated dogs who are terrified to go to a grooming parlor.
I can understand I possess that same terror. I couldn't see unleashing someone at petsmart onto one of my dogs.
I'm so glad I have 2 short haired dogs that I can wash and clip their nails at home. It sounds like there are way too many bad experiences from groomers. It taked time to find some one you trust to handle your dogs besides yourself .
