bad skin infection on her lower back. she lives in the back yard but has never had a skin infection before. does anyone have any clue what can i put on it. I already shaved that part and cleaned it out and put some iodine and petrolium jelly. Any suggestions!!
Yoou really need to take her to a vet, if you don't know what caused the problem you need to find out what it is before you can treat it. I could be many things ranging from allergies to mange. Since neither of these would be helped with what you are doing you really need to see a vet.
I had taken to the vet before, and said it wasn't mange but it could be from fleas. She used to have it on her chest but the vet gave us a spray to put on her chest twice a day. They toke a skin scraping and found no mange no nothing.
What does it look like? Any drainage/odor to it? If there is drainage, what color is it? Is it an allergy type of wound or could she have gotten bit by something or poked herself and it's festering? I honestly would load her up and take her to the vet. Not to scare you, but if it's real bad, it may have gone through her epidermis to the dermis, which is the 2nd "layer" of skin, then may need to be debrided and dressed.
In one postyou say that she has never had a skin infection before. Then next post you say she had one before and you took her to the vet. Well which is it? And if you took her to the vet before and it worked take her again. And if se has an allergy to fleas then she should be on a flea preventative.
Sounds like flea bite dermatitis..an allergy to flea saliva. try giving benadryl 1mg per pound of body weight..i.e. if your dog weighs 25 pounds, give 1 capsule 2 times a day. If your dog weighs less, use the liquid. Since you've been to the vet and scrapings are negative for mange, I'm surprised the vet didn't put the dog on Benadryl. Try this and i'll bet you will have a healthy dog in 2-3 weeks. Give it time to work.
