Here's the story of what happened to Buddy. The pics on dogster are from the first day I had him, so that's what he looked like before the attack. The next day Buddy was attacked by a Pit Bull at the dog park. He had his stomach ripped wide open. Once the owner finally got the dog off of Buddy, the poor guy was laying on the ground stiff as a board. I thought he was dead! I was so afraid to move him, thinking he was in shock. I took of my shirt and placed it over his stomach, applying pressure. I woman brought me a towel that she was using to dry her dog with. (The dog park has a dog wash section too.) I managed to wrap the shirt and towel around him, to protect the gaping wound. His organs were exposed, and covered in grass and dirt (it has just rained). The woman filled up a dog bowel with clean water and I managed to rinse his oragans through the bandage. I got them back into his body cavity, and picked him up to take him to the vet. The woman there had an SUV and offered to drive us. I was very thankful, and we hopped right in. It was a miracle that she had an ice chest with her. She let me use a cloth and some ice to put over the make-shift bandage on Buddy. I didn't want to carry him out of the car, so I had a stretcher brought out, and he was carried in on that. The vets put him under anethesia immediately, and clipped the fur around his tummy. They cleansed the wound and stitched him back up. Hours later I went back to see him. Obviously he was in pain, because when I went to touch his head, he bit me! Buddy is home now. It's been six days since the incident. He is on antibiotics to treat the peritonitis that developed in his abdominal cavity, probably from the bacteria in the pit's mouth. The medicine in in liquid form, because I soon discovered that Buddy WILL NOT take a pill, and I don't want to struggle with him through such a traumatic injury. He has a drain tube in his stomach too, to help get rid of the infectious material. I'm keeping in solely in my bedroom, as I don't want him running, jumping, or climbing stairs. He has a huge pink bandage around his body. lol The poor GUY! He keeps trying to pull it off, so I've taken plastic wrap, sprayed with bitter apple and wrapped it around him. I'll get updated pics as soon as I can. Although, I'm sure he'll be very embrassed.
Thanks guys, very much. The woman at the dog park was so wonderful! She calls every day to see how Buddy is doing. I'm considering letting her adopt Buddy, once he is all better. I'm not sure though. I've grown awfully attacked to this big hunk of love. Thanks again guys. But, I do want to make one thing clear. I DO NOT dislike pit bulls. I have no bad feelings toward them. It's the people who buy these dogs and train them to be so mean. THAT's who I have the bad feelings towards. Buddy is doing pretty well. He's laying at my feet, asleep.
I dont know if i read the story right, but i have a question. What did the owner do? Like did they put their dog to sleep or anything? Offer to pay for any vet bills? Anything like that? Just curious. And the lady that drove you,and calls everyday, if i read it right, was not the owner of the dog right?
Wow, im sorry that this happened to your dog, and i wish him the best. Your a great person
I give Merphy his pills either squeezed into a piece of cheese, or mixed in with a special treat (hamburger meat, vegetables, or something with gravy). He thinks he's getting a special treat, and I'm getting him his medicine. This works great with kids too!
