My girlfriend and I just got a new puppy a few weeks ago (a lab/pit mix). She is 13 weeks now, and has up until recently shown great promise with potty training. She'll bark near the door to let us know when it's time, or simply stand by it and look at us, waiting. We give her lots of praise when she does this, and again after she does the deed outside.
She had a few accidents in the beginning, but for the most part has really made a lot of good progress with the house training.
Here is my dilemma: A few days ago, she jumped on the couch and peed everywhere. And today, while I was in the process of making the bed, she peed on the linens that were on the floor.
Is she marking her territory? Or what? How do I deal with her when she makes these mistakes? Is there any way to prevent this from happening without making her life miserable?
Sorry hon, she simply has to much freedom in the house. Confine her to one room, hopefully the room is connected to the door to go outside. Just use a pen /gate. Don't respond to much if she has an accident, just be more alert next time. It is up to you to get her out often, and reward her for going in the appropriate place. You are building habits here so keep it up, but expect an accident at least once or twice. After 6 weeks of no accidents, I would say you have success.
