Please if possible give me so details!! I keep reading on the forum about housebreaking your pup and teaching them how to ring a bell when they want to go out. I think this is an excellent idea anyone care to give detail? I would really appreciate it!!! I want to use this method....
I have seen it on a puppy video, but because poms are so small I knew it wouldn't work. Max kind of lets me know by barking and sitting by the door. I'm sure prince will too, soon enough. Keep taking him out the same door and he'll know when to alert you.
:) You're very welcome. I have tried it with Max but he was so little like Prince that he just didn't know what to do. He's just began to let me know my excessively barking until I let him out, or sitting by the door. It'll take a little bit of time though.
Though it might take awhile, it can be done. Teach the dog to touch the bell with his nose (not on the door). Give lots of praise, treats, etc. Slowly work on him touching the bell (and making the noise) on the door.
Then what I did was have Kiba ring the bell, praise, then let her outside. Do this every time you go out, even if it's not to go potty.
Hopefully he will get it. We stopped after awhile because the bell kept on getting caught in the door... so maybe putting it beside it would work better.
And I have a friend w/ a chi that can do it, and a lab/border mix, so any size dog can do it.
My dogs are trained with a communication bell. They have one by each door and one by the water bowl, in case it ever runs out.
First hang the bells off the door, or even preferably right beside the door. tell your dog touch/hit/nose whatever and gently push them into the bells. As soon as the bells make a noise let your dog out. Soon stand in front of the door and ask, want to go out? Your dog will bounce and wiggle in front of the door, but once they hit those bells and hear the noise only then do you let them out. Your dog will begin to understand, Ring bell = Open door. That's what works for me.
