one... my new puppy chews and bites on herself alot... she was given a frontline treatment 5 days ago at the rescue we got her from and the vet said she doesn't appear to have fleas.... any thoughts? when can i frontline her again?
two... my puppy loves her crate and will not come out of it to go outside unless we pick her up out of it to bring her up by her food or outside... any tricks to getting her to come out of the crate on her own? and teach her to walk up the stairs?
Hmmm... First, I would not Frontline again until 30 days is up; if I am not mistaken, you cannot reapply before the 30 days. If you have the box, double-check there or with your vet. I'm not too sure, but I wonder if it could be allergies. Maybe if you try a chew-stop product (if its safe to do so) and see if it helps break the habit? Again, I'd check with the vet first.
As far as the crate thing goes, I think it's good that she loves her crate. Try luring her out with soft, yummy treats. My dog loves cheese, but anything she likes will do. Use positive reinforcement - praise and treat her when she steps forward, and especially when she comes out. She probably feels safe there, so make her see that it is ok to come out. Do the same thing for going up stairs. Just be sure to really praise her - treats, and lots of "good girl!" and petting...
Congrats with your new puppy! What kind of dog is she?
As for the chewing and biting... It could be that she's having a mild skin irritation from Fontline. I find those products in general to be very strong especially on a pups skin. Have you you noticed any dry skin flakes?
As for not wanting to leave her crate... it could be that she's still unsure of her surroundings. Perhaps coming from a rescue shelter has left her a bit traumatized. At a shelter she would've spent most of her time in a wire crate of some kind. Perhaps that's all she knows... for now. Just try to be patient and very understanding. Luv can over come a great many things! :) She'll learn soon enough that she's in a good luving home.
I wouldn't be in too much rush with teaching her to climb the stairs. By the way how old is she? With my puppy Turbo I let him explore the stairs when he was ready. When he was curious enough I knew his level of confidence would also be ready. Perhaps waiting until her agility is strong enough to take on the stairs. :)
she is a shep mix with something else that we aren't sure of... she is 3 months old and only 11 pounds... she definetely had a rough life at the shelter... we are feeding her beneful puppy food which she seems to like... i will hold off on the frontline and the only treats we have now are hard biscuits so i will get osme soft ones.. we have been trying to treat her into coming out but we do agree that the crate is a great place if she is happy there... today though she started taking a bone and heading to the corner of the room... she seems much happier than two days ago and we are showering her with love...
she lets people pet her but will not walk around or come to us when we call her... if we are right by her she licks us and let's us rub her down...
she does have a little dandruff...for the person who asked...
No more Frontline for 30 days after the original application was done.
Sounds like she just needs some time to seetle in and get accostomed to her new home. She will come around, give lots of love and patience and she will start investigating and wandering about soon enough.
Food...I would consider switching to a higher qaulity food, very possible it is omething related to the food. Not a guarantee, but that brand isnt a great food anyway, so switiching may be for the best either way.
Sounds like her problem is not flea related at all but most likely caused by the food. Beneful is loaded with corn and not a good food. Try giving her something with no corn and see if it makes a difference. It probably will.
