I went to a schutzhund training session saturday. In which I might add I was entirely impressed with dogs as companions. They were not mean actually they were very fun loving. I was also impressed with the obedience of the animals I was wondering if anyone new of a good temperment test for puppies to see if they had a good temperment for this sport. unfortunatly my malinois as to much of a defense drive for schutzhund but I am intrested in purchasing a bitch to bred gunny with and i would also like her to be of sport in nature
schutzhund is a sport. consiting of three areas obedience, tracking and personal protection. it is of german orgin meaning protection dog. the german police used at first to test the dogs for police work and later for training. it is an excellent for police training to bad most of police force use the stress out method to get the dogs to bite. not the play method schutzhund uses.
When I went to talk to the people about Schutzhund for my AB they pretty much told me that the best time to take them would be at 2 yrs. They don't like taking them before that but when I was there they had a puppy training their but she was also from a good Schutzhund bloodline. I would sugest that if you are looking in Schutzhund to find a breeder that has Schutzhund blood lines.
it was mentioned ealier but getting a puppy from a good schutzhund back ground is the way to go. they usually do a puppy temperment test on them before they are sold. I know the club back home would have you go though basic obedience classes and things like that the first year. then at a year of age you can start training for your compainion dog title. then at two years of age if it has passed it compainion dog title they will start the bite work. they do have puppy sleaves that you can use to get them use to it, but they don't do the intense training until they are two years old. they would also start tracking in the first year too, well they are puppies. each club is diffrent of course just like everything. so you would have to check with them when and how to get started with the training. I also wanted to mention that a lot of police dogs do go though schutzhund training. a lot of them are trained in schutzhund get their titles and then they are sold to police departments.
One go to the clubs. Two find a stable line look at both parents, are there temperment correct for their breed.
