Well, we got to the vet and I must say, I have never been prouder of my boy. He did not fuss much at all and he let the vet do a full examination and even touch his face and lift his lips to check his teeth and gums. He allowed her to lift his tail and check everything out, all without a fuss. She kept commenting on what a great boy he was and how she could tell that we have worked hard with him. I was a VERY proud Chow mommy.
Alright as far as what happened. The nearest we could tell was that ate something that tore up his large intestine and possibly colon. He is on a special food to help stop the diareah and he is on two medicines to help heal his insides. She said to contact her within a week to let her know how things are going, if any other symptoms come up like vomiting, lethary, or just not acing like himself, I am supposed to bring him back.
So he is doing well but he is in dire need of a bath. I have to be careful because he is swollen and sore in his hind end, so I may wait until tomorrow to give him a bath.
Years ago I had a dog get into or garbage and he ate a bunch of cooked sparerib bones. When he tried to pass them it looked like a murder was committed. Blood everywhere. Didn't seem to have any lasting effects. Just made a point of having more secure lids on the garbage cans.
We have ours so the cats and him can't get to any of the cans but we are thinking he mays have chewed up a stick while we were camping. We had tried to get everything in our area cleaned up but he is pretty sneaky and can always manage to find SOMETHING.....no matter how many toys or treats he has available.
Here is a little piece of advice...you can use a little dab of Ambesol on his tush to help with the pain. It's for oral pain relief so it shouldn't hurt him, but will take the fire out of his tush for a while. I guess you can use solorcaine, or any of those anesthetics for it too....Glad to hear he's ok..
Ambesol will burn like a fire. Trust me I know someone who mixed up ambesol for anusol.. They were hurtin' for certain.. I would ask the vet, but I bet a nice warm water rinse will be soothing, and maybe some hydrocortizone cream.
When you have rear end problems they always suggest sitz baths.. And they have helped me out tremendously since the radiation has burned my bowels, I have a pretty good idea of what your poor baby is going through.
Well, good news. We have no more bleeding. He does not seem so sore back there and his diareah is almost gone. He is on special food for 4 days and on two different meds that he gets twice a day. We are taking him up today to get a bath. He likes to go to the self groomers, so we are going there in a couple hours. I hate it because he is being such a good boy and I cannot give him any treats or anything for at least a week. At the end of the four days we have to start weaning him back o to his hard food(Canidae).
Thank You all for your concerns. He is getting better everyday and we will be watching him like a hawk when we go camping again.
