I know it obviously depends on the breed, and within the breed genetics have a part as well as how well the dog was fed. However, is there a formula, for say a lab puppy, to tell how heavy, tall and/ or long it will approximately be when it's fully grown??
I know with children you can do this by taking the height at the age of two and multiplying it by 2 to get their approx. adult height.
Is there a formula for Puppies?? If there is, there is probably one for large breed and a different one for small breed puppies. Possibly for medium too.

I don't think there is. It is all dependent on genetics. I have never been able to tell how tall or short someone will be when they grow up just by formulas. I have known kids that looked like they were going to be 7ft tall and they end up being average or a little shorter. I have known kids that looked short for their age end up growing to be average or taller. I don't think you can actually go by formulas, it is all genetics.
Some people say to take a puppy off of puppy food earlier because it is not all that good for them to be on it for a full year because of the rapid growth rate. They say around 7 to 9 months to switch them over to adult food and they will grow slower but will get to the right height that was meant for them genetically. Some disagree, but I am going by what different people and veterinarians have told me. I have done that with one of my dogs before and they grew to the right height. It did take him a little longer but he eventually got there.
This is a good question and I hope someone can help me as well. I have 2 cocker spaniels that are 1-1/2 years old and the female weighs 23 and the male weighs 27. We also have a puppy that is around 15 weeks old and he weighs 13 lbs. He is supposed to be a "smaller" cocker spaniel as his parents were both in the 15-20 lb range. But at the rate he is going it looks like he might get to be bigger than both of them. Is there anyone out there that is familiar with cockers and could let me know how much my little guy will weigh?
I would just wait it out and see because no one can really tell you how big he will eventually get. Genetics plays a part in not only the parents but the grandparents and ancestry as well. Maybe he will slow down on his growing. He will be bigger than his mother more than likely because males tend to be bigger anyways. How much are you feeding him? That could be some of the problem. No one really knows your dog like you should. Do you know the grandparents or background about the dog? Or do you own both parents? Just wait it out and see even if he turns out to be bigger I am sure you will love him just as much anyways.
I was wondering because I was going today to buy her a new crate and there are many sizes. I wanted to get one with a devider that will accomodate her when she is fully grown. That is why I wanted approximate estimates.
I was told her mother is 60 lbs.
The largest cage was 119 $ and the next size down was 91$ the next was 62$ and there were smaller ones.
I looked up approximate lengths for labs, and found out that the 91 $ cage was the perfect one.
Your best bet is to ask your breeder. Hopefully you have an experienced, knowledgable breeder that will tell you (in their estimation only) what size they think they will get based on their experience...and not a crud breeder who sells them as 'going to be small' just to catch someones eye.
A good breeder can give a good estimation of they have been doing it awhile and know their lines.
Unfortunately the breeder she came from had a terminal illness and gave his last litter (of six pups) to Animatch, a non-profit animal rescue adoption agency, before he died.
So I don't know much about the breeder or the history of the dogs. But you make a good point that you usualy can and should get that information from the breeder, unless there is an extreme circumstance, like mine.

When I worked at the veterinary hospital we used to tell people to double the pups weight at 4 months and that's how big they would grow up to be. Most of the time we did this for people who acquired their dogs from the pound amd it wasn't always clear what the mix was.
Our Vet would not speculate on what weight my Poms or Lab would be. Our Breeder gave us approx's but again that can never be exact either...just approx. as it depends on what and how much you feed them. So if you go off the breed in itself to get an approx. Based on 2 Labs within our family (mine and my sisters) and 4 in our neighborhood. They are all between 60-70lbs full grown, the 70lb dog is overweight. Maybe that could help? I also have seen a big difference in Black, Chocolate and Yellow Labs...these are all black labs I am speaking of.
There really isn't any way to tell. My american bully was the runt of the litter and now she is bigger than all her sisters and almost the size of her smallest brother. The vet said she is very healthy and she is all muscle and little fat.
She is little over a year old and still on lamb and rice puppy food for large breeds. I've spoken to the vet as well as a few breeders and all recommend to leave her on puppy food until she's at least 1 1/2 years old. It really all just depends on the breed.
The kennel with the divider is the same one i got for our dog. It has been amazing and saved us quite a bit money. It is really easy to collaps and easy to transport when we visit family.
