It never ceases to amaze me that so many people are against developing new breeds. I love my pure bred Golden and was tickled over my pure bred huskey, but then... I just love dogs. They are so interesting and sweet. It saddens me that so many pure breds have health issues. When my kids came home with their designer puppies, I fell in love. My little "grand" poochin is sweet as pie and our little "grand" puggle has a wonderful combination of beagle and pug qualities.
laredos_mom-- I don't know about that. Honestly there are several breeds that are WORSE off because of AKC standards in my opinion. PUGS are one of them, along with english bulldogs, Boston Terriers and I have heard from people on her GSD's.
I raised pugs for several years, I have seen Champion pugs at dog shows. I just don't see how you can get too much more unhealthy as a pug. Love em' but sorry.
I believe both mixes and pure breds have their own faults, just because one is purebred and comes from a show breeder doesn't mean that the dog will never ever get sick. My vet told me that purebreds do get sick more often than mixes, go on and bash me I am used to it, but that is what they told me.
We had a mixed mutt that I had when I was little and she lived to be 15yrs. old and was never sick hardly with anything and she was free at a shopping center, a old man had a litter by accident and was giving them away, she was a very healthy dog. Just because she loves her dog even though it is mixed shouldn't matter where the dog came from, she loves it and that's that.
You all say you are on here to educate but it seems like you all are quick to judge and slam people. All she was doing was talking about how she loves her new puggle. But just because she said something that wasn't liked about purebreds, instead of educating you started bashing her. That is just the way I am seeing it.
Maybe she did get it from a BYB, but she still loves her pet and that is all that really matters. At least that dog has a nice home and is being loved.
I know of a hell of a lot more problems in the 'top show lines' of boxers than in the 'pet quality' lines. Go figure, and show lines are more likely to do genetic testing.
I personally think that it has to do with too much linebreeding and inbreeding. What else would it be from? They are suposed to be superior dogs, but I never had problems with any of my dogs until breeding with a Champion that had a severe immunity problems that I didn't know about.
Larados_mom-- we all have to go by our own personal experiences.

>>> It never ceases to amaze me that so many people are against developing new breeds.<<<
It's not against the dog itself more against the people doing this. When 2 different breeds produce puppies that does not make it a new breed- its a mix breed or mutt. Mix breeds have been around way before someone coined the term "Hybrid breed".
The ones selling these hybrid breeds are NOT doing the general public or the breed itself much of a service. They are just taking two dogs and mating them- not rocket science here just ignorance on the hybrid breeders part.
The whole point of breeding is to take the top dogs and allow them to reproduce. They are proven dogs in both appearance and health therefore will create healthy beautiful offspring. Most hybrid dogs are NOT checked health wise and basically you can get that at any shelter all across America for a fraction of the cost.
You are correct that mixed breeds can be wonderful companion dogs! They can be just as healthy as any purebred too. They can also be very sick due to poor breeding practices.
I think most breeders would be thrilled to death if people got their Hybrid dogs from the local shelter. Rather than support someone with no ethics one could save a life of a wonderful hybrid for hundreds of dollars less. Now that would make everyone feel good! The hybrid dog would win, the shelter would recover some of the costs, and a deserving family who wants a mix bred dog would surely benefit!
Breeder=Purebred Shelter=Hybrid and some purebred needing a home. Breed Specific Rescue=Purebred in need of a home.
Breeding mixed breed dogs, charging high prices for them and calling them "designer breeds" is not developing a breed. It is lining the pockets of disreputable backyard breeders and puppymillers. There are hundreds of known breeds. What is wrong with one of them? Why the need to have these "poo" and "doodle" breeds? Considering that there is no consistency in size, color, coat length, hypoallergic claims, etc., what's the point? Go to the shelter if you want a mixed breed dog. Give one of them a home.
It never ceases to amaze me how people turn it around to say that because you are against people mixing 2 breeds you must be against mixed breed dogs.
I personally am against people mixing 2 purebred dogs to make designer puppies that sell for 1500 bucks! Oh yeah they love their dogs....they love how much money they bring! That's what makes me physically ill.
I am not against mixed breed dogs themselves...how could I be I'm the proud owner of one!
