What Breed?
i am a very responsible teen and need help picking out a breed all help is appreciated

hello i am 13 and i live on the highway(i still have a nice sized yard) so i am asking for only money from family and friends on xmas. my parents are giving me about $200 and opening me a savings account and i have asked them to make me put ALL my $$$ from xmas and babysitting jobs into it so i can afford to get a fence around my yard.
HERE IS WHERE I NEED YOUR HELP:
i hav a a 3 year old brother
a 7 year old sister
and a cat and a kitten

I hav estimated being able to get the $$$$ in 18 months to 2 years. and i caonnot think of a suitable breed
me and my father like large breeds and mother likes small breeds and my little brother can sometimes be rough but will be older when i get the puppy
So if you have any suggestions pleasae tell me i would love the help!!!!!!!
i would be getting the dog in may because i would be out of school and would hav time for socializing ,training and so on

It depends how much time you are willing to exercise this dog. Especially when winter hits and you are in school. Will you be willing to take the dog out for a walk before and after school? Really think about that.

Any breed can be good with kids really, as long as they're raised that way.

It's cute that you have it all planned out and everything. I like the fact that you're earning the dog by yourself without nagging your parents for the money :) But, what will happen when you go back to school? You'll probably have a lot of homework and be preoccupied with that. Is this your first dog? Do your parents work? How long will the puppy/dog be alone during the day? Do they agree with you by bringing a dog into the family? Are any of your family members sensitive or allergic to pet hair? These are questions you should really think about first...

There are a lot of great breeds to choose from, does shedding matter? How active do you want the dog to be? Also when you finally decide which breed you want, make sure to do some extra research on it's health characteristics, in case you aren't prepared. Good luck with everything.

Yes.. it's VERY responsible for you to plan for a puppy!

But I don't have any advice on what breed... since I only like small dogs....and you like big ones.

It's great that a youngster is taking on responsibility and planning things out.

I would suggest you check out the AKC website for the various breeds that are out there, if you are planning on getting a pure bred dog. You may want to go to a rescue home and get to know that breed and see their positives and negatives.

You may want to go to a humane society and pick out your pup that way as well.

well actually i just got new news from my mother and she said a larger breed would be better :)
examples
german shepherd
golden retriever
that kind of size

Border Collie , German Shepherd, golden retriever,austrailian shepherd, medium to large breeds.
What do you guys think??

Border collies and Aussies probably arent a great pick... they need ALOT of exercise... more than you'll be able to give when you go to school 6hrs a day. They need a job too.

Please do alot of research besides on here on any breeds you pick.

Another thing you can do when you are ready for your dog, is get in touch with your local rescue organizations and let them know the characteristics that are important to you. Like "calm" "good with children" "playful" whatever, Then, when the get one that they think will fit your situation, you can go meet the dog and see if you "click".

It might just end up being a mixed-breed, but it will need a good loving home and might be just what your family is looking for.

the reason i was thinking a aussie is my grandmother owns one and i love her to bits and she is just sooooo smart i also wanted to do agility with my pup. i taught my grandmothers dog to sit and lay down over a 3 day weekend i spent at their house. I know you have to research breeds when you are thimking of getting that breed. i have many books on 100 s of breeds (and the use of internet) i also need a purebred akc registered dog
