My three 1/2 yr. old Daschound keeps constantly licking and scratching the inside of his front pow armpits. It has gotten to the point where the skin is irriteted red and already crusty. He does this moslty during the night and any chance he gets when we are not watching. He started a few months ago, we took him to the vet, they took cultures for fungi and gave him antyinflamatories and antibiotics for 21 days. He stopped for a while, but now he has started again. Could it be dirt buildup in the armpit that is making him itch, or is it something else. I cant afford vet visits avery two months, last one cost me over $400. Please help if you have had such experiences.
my vet is not in today, and the other one does not want to recommend benadryl without my vets concent. that means i have to wait till tomorrow to hear from him. should i give it on my own terms, i was going to give him half of 25mg tablet. he just wont stop itching and scratching, he is just so nervous and aggitated from all of this.
have you tried any type of animal grade hydrocortizone spay? giving him a bath in baby shampoo or a good oatmeal based shampoo? can you put on an E collar so he cant do it, so that area has time to heal? the bynadryl will make him sleepy and you have to be careful of the doseage....
he may just do it to do it....habits are hard to break, is he bored?, need a toy at night theres are several different reasons for this obessive behavior.
When my basset was doing that it turned out to be a yeast infection. She only chewed on one front arm til there was a sore but it was constant chewing/licking/biting.
Her armpits often were red looking too though. The vet said for me to keep her pits dry but geesh it's not like the dog went swimming or anything. I have heard that sometimes putting a t-shirt on will help keep the irritation down.
Allergies is another thing that comes to mind.

can males have a yeast infection? he only bite/chews/licks one leg. it is red and swolen, and im getting frustrated. i gave him less than half a tablet of 25 mg benadryl and he is wearing a tee shirt. im thinking its some food allergy, we switched his food today and we will not touch it.
Isis, my great dane was doing this same thing. No mange or infection, turned out to be her food. I was feeding her Authority Large Breed Puppy. After a switch she has been doing great ever since. Could it be a food allergy? Has there been a change in his diet?
