My schnauzer had 7 pups and she keeps trying to take the runt somewhere else. I am keeping her away from the pups and staying with her when i let everybody suck. Anybody had this problem before. Thanks
How are they all doing? How often are you putting them in with her to nurse? Is it ONLY the one pup she is doing this with? Unfortunately many times when the mom does this, it is her intinct telling her omething i wrong with that pup. I hope that isnt the case for you. How old are the pups now? What has the vet said about how that little one is in his opinion?
It is her first litter. She had the first one on the exam table at the vets and the rest were taken by a c section. They were born on wensday. I am letting her in with the pups every hour to hour and a half. The rest of the pups are doing great. we are feeding the runt some formula that we got at the vets.
Its not uncommon for a first time mom who has her pups via c-section to not relate to them and refuse to care for them, so your lucky in the respect that she is feeding them. The pups that she will except should be left with her 24/7, provide a covered heating pad to keep them warm. If she is harming the runt, then you are doing right by removing him except for feedings.... but he also will need kept on a heating pad and in a draft free area. I would allow the pup to nurse as much as possible from the mother, and then top it off with formula. Moms milk is best and has the antibodies it needs as well. Watch closely for dehydration and many times a hand fed pup can get aspiration pnuemonia, I generaly have my vet check the pup 2-3 times a week when they are a weak pup so they can be on top of any problems before they get too bad.
How does your vet feel the pup is doing? Many times mom knows something is wrong and will refuse care of a sick puppy. Keep us posted, and pics when you get some of the babies!
You are indeed lucky she is letting them nurse, I had a mom who went thru a c~section and she didn't accept the pups....I have miniature schnauzers too.
Instinct is hard to deal with but she may "know" something that you are not able to see....if the vet says the runt is fine then make sure to keep the pup on a heating pad BUT, also ensure that the pup can move away from it if it wants.....it should be on low and checked often. NEVER feed a cold pup, they cant digest the forumla properly...warm them first.
Is the mom helping the runt to potty?, if NOT you will have to do that yourself...watch what she does when the pup is with her to find out.
