I have 1.5 year old lab and an 8 week old lab. I have read that you are supposed to allow them to sort out their roles, but I am getting a bit concerned about what is considered appropriate. My older lab was pulling the puppy around by its ear, scruff of the neck and leg. I intervened. Was that the right thing to do? What other things or behaviors do i need to consider regarding their interaction?
Yes, you were right to intervene. Your dog can hurt a 8 week old pup. When I had a new pup I only let her around the other dogs inside for short amount of time under close supervision. I also want the pup to bond with me, not the dog.
Riley, I love the puppy pictures of Jazz and Riley play fighting. They are beautiful dogs. I didn't realize that Springer Spaniels were so large, you say Riley is 75 pounds? How big is Jazz?
I stopped at a yard sale in Northern Wisconsin last year and they had a litter of ESS puppies in the back yard. They let me to go see the babies and I thought they told me they'd be between 40 and 50 pounds. They are the cutest puppies, but must have been undersized?
I always watch to see how hard my dogs are on a pup and after that I use that info when I scold a pup, for the dogs to keep the respect they dicapline (what we believe) in harsh way. Puppies can take alot more then we think. Of course you should watch out so that it is dicapline and not jealousy.
o btw play and dicapline go hand in hand with dogs they learn through play.. All will be fine, pain is also something dogs need to learn and they do that through rough play, but as one gets hurt the other dog will stop or calm down.. no worries :)
I have heard of small pups being hurt by larger dogs, thats why I like to be careful. when I brought Sophie home she was 9 weeks and 21lbs. there was no way I would let my 130lb rottweiler play too rough or drag her around. As far as the bonding, sometimes when a pup is around the other dogs too much the first few months they bond too much with them. I wanted Sophie to see me as the greatest, most fun, not the other dogs.It depends on what you want with your dogs.
