Microchip Implants, food, etc (new adoption)
I just adopted Buddy and he is the first small breed dog, I've had.

I have questions about the microchip implant he received at the animal shelter. How does it not exit his body if its just injected under the skin. 2. The shelter gave us Science Diet Dog Food and he won't eat it. His previous owners gave him table food all the time and he won't eat "dog" food or even treats. The vet says he suffers from low blood sugar and I can't make him go hungry till he's hungry enough to eat the dog food, he gets very sick. We have tried Mighty Dog (grocery store) and the other foods are so expensive its a waste if he won't eat it. I need help. I don't know how to bump.

For the food issue, I found the premium foods are actually not much more expensive, because it takes less to fill them up, they have less stools,and in the long run they will be alot healthier. I feed my dogs wellness fish & sweet potato, a few of my dogs had been picky eaters till I put them on this food.I'm not fond of science diet dog food, I've had friends who fed that food, and had many issues. There are other natural dog foods that are lower in price like chicken soup for the dog lovers soul, it's a good quality food, start with a small bag to see if he likes it first, some of the privately owned pet stores will sometimes have free samples, so you can try a few different foods, to see what he will eat. what kind of dog is he ?

go to the pet store and buy a can of merricks chicken pot pie dog food. i would bet my paycheck he will eat it. you can use that food to mix into some dry food so he doesnt eat just canned foods all the time. if he is a small breed dog like a chihuahua then if he likes the merricks canned he may also enjoy the merricks dry. if he is a larger breed of dog i wouldnt suggest the merricks unless you are rich because it is very pricey. if he is a larger dog you can feed him CANIDAE dry dog food. it is one of the best dog foods on the market and it is really really affordable. i pay 34.00 for a 40 pound bag.

try the merricks canned ...... it has chunks of real chicken and potatoes and other veggies in it. it looks just like it came from your dinner plate.

He is a long-haired chihuahua. He is 4 yrs old and quite a picky eater LOL. I will try your suggestion tonight. Look for a thumbs up or down tomorrow! Thanks for the suggestion.

Scout, I got two cans of Merrick's dog food two different flavors, he sniffed at the one tonight and walked away. So the first can was a no go. We will try the second flavor tomorrow. However I did not give in to the temptation of frying another hamburger for him, maybe tomorrow he will be hungrier and will eat.

i had to go back 5 pages to find this thread.

DANG ! i thought for SURE he would eat it. i havent met a dog yet who would turn down that food. i know there are a couple of varieties of it that my dogs wont eat either, but the grammies pot pie one everydog i know loves it.

i dont know what else to suggest, other then letting him fast a day or two so he gets really hungry and then stick with one food and that food only and he will eventually eat it.

of course you could cook for him, but once you do that, you will always do that, so if you do make sure you are commited to doing so for the rest of his life. and give him a dog vitamin if you do decide to cook for him, so he gets everything he needs.

Lani, if he truly isn't eating then be sure to rub some Kayro syrup on his gums ever couple hours to keep his glucose levels up. They can drop, especilaly so low that the dog can go into seizures from it.

Why not try boiled rinsed hmbg or chicken with rice - some yogurt, & sweet potatoes. Or mix some baby food in with his kibble.

honestly the best food is an all raw meat and bones diet.

But, maybe thy ordering some dog food from drs foster and smith. My vet says science diet is a quick way to kill your dog. It really is crap. Beneful and kibbles and bits are crap too. As well as all walmart foods.

try warming the dog food and maybe cooking some rice to out in, just the thing that you've cooked it on the stove makes any pup lick there lips.. :)
My poodle is a bit picky, but because she is starting to get poor eyesight her food has to be senior.
Just a tip but it works on my dogs, it's all a mind game :)
Don't treat your dog human, it will only treat you like a dog.

Lol well fortunately or unfortunately he did eat some scrambled egg, (plain) did order some Dr. Foster's food but it will take a few days. He was acting pretty lathargic so rubbed some white corn syrup on his gums and he almost licked my fingers off. Then he ate the egg. If I put my finger is the grammy's pet food he would lick of the gravey, so will try it again. But just putting a bit on a saucer, no way. Hopefully he'll eat the other food, my heart will break if he doesn't. Will keep you all updated and thank you so much for the ideas.
