Our three cats were formerly indoor/outdoor cats. They've had to be kept indoor for over a year now in an apartment in the city while our new house is being built (long story, don't ask!) Anyway - they have taken to scratching the wooden furniture, doorjambs, couches....just everyplace. I provided them with a scratching post which only provided minimal interest. What can I do?! This place is a rental and I can see my security deposit being totally lost because of their damage!
If your cats are not used to a scratching post, your wasting your time unless you teach them how to use it. My cats were taught when they were kittens, You may want to try sprinkling some cat nip on the scrath post.
Declawing is cruel, that is definately not the answer. Keep the cats nails trimmed, and train it to use a scratching post. You can try one of the cardboard scratching post, they work pretty well, and are inexpensive.
I bought a piece of cat furniture on EBAY that has some sort of rope wrapped around the legs.. My cats were all over 2 years old at the time.. I put some cat nip around it to get their interest and haven't had a problem since..
