We are considering getting a GSP. I have read that they can be prone to bloat. I don't know anyone on here with a GSP, but I know Irish Setters are also prone to bloat. What has your experience been with this? Ever have any problems? I'm wondering how common it is. What I have read says that females are less likely than males to get it, and that it can be hereditary (particularly if both parents have deep, narrow chests) What can you tell me?
I have had one setter die from bloat. What a God awful way to go and just wrenching while it dies in your arms at the vets office on an ER basis. This particular family of setters all died from bloat. My first experience with a byb/miller....All large chested dogs are prone to bloat. But knock on wood I haven't had any close to bloating since 1987. The Irish Seter Club of America's website has a health section where they discuss bloat. THere was an awesome testing/research study put out by Purdue University.
I would not shy away from a large chested dog based upon bloat, but I would do my homework. I hope this helps a bit. If you would like more, just PM me.
I like him a lot better than I like most people. To you he's a dog. TO me he's an adopted son who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and doesn't speak clearly. I have no problem with any of these. <
