If you are in an area with Heartworm problems, you can't wait until she stops gaining weight. You give her the dose in her size range now. It is too big of risk to wait. I would guess if you give her the size for up to 25 pounds she will be covered. Or if she is really small just give her a half dose for now, and then start with regular dosing next month. Dogs stop graining weight..........never if they are being over fed. That is what causes fat dogs. I would guess she would not reach her full adult size until 9-12 months of age. I start my pups on Heartguard at 12 weeks old during Heartworm season.
He's your friend, your partner, your defender your dog.You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours faithful and true to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to worthy of such devotion
I have a two year old shih tzu and 1 12 year old shi poo they have both been on heart worm since they been 6 months old and my vet never said any thing about them needing to stop gaining wt if that was the case dogs like those that belong to some of my relatives and friends would never get to have there heart worm medication. But them I am one that takes my dogs to the vet like clock work.
Perhaps your vet just meant that it wouldn't be wise to buy a 6 month supply because the puppy is still growing, BUT I believe single doses can be purchased until your dog's weight stabalizes (for lack of a better word).
The only reason I think that is b/c my father has a 4 month old rottie (he takes her to the petsmart vet), and he too was told not to get a 6 month supply b/c of weight. So for the time being, he just gets single doses to accomodate her weight gain.
Caliprincess how much does your little shihpoo weigh. Sadie my 1 12 year old is ten pounds five ounces she weight that since about since she been 8 months old. I looked at her health records. Is are you going to have you little one fixed both of mine are and maybe that is why she gained the weight by 8 months where it was safe for her to have it given to her.
