So, I haven't owned a bird in about 10 years. I used to have parakeets and now I'm moving up to the Eclectus, my dream bird. So, I talked to a breeder and they have a female already, or at least she's pretty sure, but they won't know until the feathers come in(one to two weeks), she won't be ready to come home until 4-5 months, unless she takes longer to develop(mentally). Well, I'm trying to think of a name for her. Any suggestions? I'm getting a female one, and for those that don't know they look like this:http://www.theperch.net/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/2842/cat/526 the female is on the left the male is on the right. I want to name her something that means red, or maybe not. I was thinking Chianti, which means red wine, but I'm not completely sure. I'm more partial to Japanese Names, so far I haven't gotten a sure answer on what that sounds like from japan, so far what I found its either Aka Akai, one of those two. Anywho, any suggestions?
Hi nicoolx2, I'm not sure how much help I can be on names. I understand if you prefer Japanese names. My only thought would be that since the Eclectus is mainly from the South Pacific Islands, that you could maybe look up some female type names in Polynesian (sp?). Than can be a very lovely language. For me with my birds, it was/is easy. I usually give all mine names of Biblical people that mean something to me. Like my Joshua (Greater Sulpher Crested Cockatoo). When I got him, I had to drive to Ohio to pick him up. I had to cross 3 rivers there and back. Since Joshua led Israel across the Jordan to the land The Lord promised, I named him Joshua. Really I just want to wish you luck with your new baby. Eclectus are beautiful birds; especially the hens. I am also glad to see that you're getting from a great breeder that believes in keeping the babies till they are ready to be on their own.
I haven't checked this thread in a while. Gee, I actually helped someone! I have had parrots for 20+yrs. I've had Budgies, 3 species of Conures, 3 species of Macaw, 4 species of Cockatoos, Yellow Nape Amazons, and Congo African Greys. I have seen and played with many Eclectus of several diff species, but never owned any. The name you chose is beautiful. I wish you much luck and joy with your new friend, when you get her home.

:), Thank you, I already know I'm going to get more birds after this one. lol, Be it a male Eclectus, maybe, but I've always liked Ringnecks, Indian/African, either Latino or Blue, I like both of those colors. So, I'll probably have both of those colors, lol.
Amen on more birds. Ringnecks are great birds too. They have some wonderful colors. I like the way their colors are kind of Pastel, rather than Bright like some. The only thing you need to do with a Ringneck (most) is to handle it regularly, as if not, they can get a bit nippy.
Just remember what my mentor told me when I started; "Birds are to enjoy and love, don't get so many that you get overwhelmed and don't have time for anything but cleaning, feeding, etc". I got that way when I had 12 at a time (all large but 2) and took care of my Grandson's Conure and my Daughter's Conure and Cockateel. It wasn't much fun. I enjoy them now that I am down to just 5.
I started to do research on Ringnecks, but I got sick of it. I just learned everything I could about the Eclectus, so I'm not in the mood to learn about another bird, especially since I won't be getting it for a long while, at least a year. :P I got their attitude, or the fact you have to handle them a lot, but then I got bored, and I focused back on the Eclectus...lol
