My husband and I went to see his mom this past Saturday and it is a three hour drive to get there. We took both of our babies(Chico and Tia). We decided to talk his mom, step dad and his brother fishing so we all went down to the local peir there. A comment was made about me putting sunscreen on Tia's head from his brother. He thought it was stupid and said she was just a "dog". Needless to say it hurt my feelings as well as Allens. I realize she is a dog but they are our babies and you wouldn't let a baby get sunburned so why should we. I may be crazy but she isn't sunburned. I just wanted to see what you thought about that.
I remember my 1st time taking Lucy to Dog Beach; an all white bully with pink skin and some random black spots. Every grandma on the beach was shocked that I didn't have sunscreen on her and it didn't take me to long to realize why... when we got her home I immediately saw the red & grabbed the aloe plant.
We took her to the vet that week for shots and they gave me a prescription sunscreen for free (I was really embarrassed I felt like we were animal abusers!) I should have thought more as I always wear sunscreen everyday, being a Florida Native, but we learned fast that it is certainly a necessity & I make sure to tell other dog owners.
As for family picking on you, I hear you on the silly aspect lol. I feed Lucy raw and am told she gets fed better than my fiance and they add on the fact that Lucy goes everywhere with me, including vacations (we get the spoiled dog comment a lot). Most of my relatives know that I can't have children so Lucy has been able to help me feel alive again...
Truthfully brush your shoulders off, if it makes you happy to know your baby is happy and healthy thats all that should matter! =)
azynda your not an animal abuser, mosts people instinsc tis ot to put sunscreen on their dog, but better safe then sorry. My dog has never gottten sunburned before, but should i start to put suntan lotion on her? And can I use human kind or is their a doggy kind?
We live in Florida also so I've always had to deal with the heat. Everyone that knows us, know that we treat both of our babies like real babies. I just couldn't believe that he'd say something like that. I use human sunscreen lotion or spray.
Aww, how mean! All it shows is that you care that much about your dog. =) I don't think that's weird at all. I don't really have that problem though with my golden retriever lab and beagle. The golden has really long fur; the lab has her double coat and the beagle is completley covered with her smooth coat.
