Ok. My Lab is 7 years old. And i was just wondering how old they usually live to be. Lately i have noticed it looks like its hurts her sometimes to go up our steps. To go into our house there are only 2 and she seems like shes in good shape and health. Shes full blooded, i have had her ever since she was a little baby. She turned 7 April 24th. Shes the best dog i have ever had. The other day my little sister fell and hurt herself then Sassy (lab) came and grab me by the shirt and got me and took me to her. She is the smartest dog i have ever had, then yesterday i saw her cross the road to go to my nanas, i saw her look both ways and there was a car coming so she sat down until it passed then she got up and went across, i thought it was so cute. lol. So how long do they nomraly live? I know i`m really gonna miss her.
My dads lab is currently 8 years old and still in great shape. With labs you have to be careful with things like hip displasia and arthritis. You also shouldn't let her out off leash by herself, she could get hit by a car or stolen. If she's having trouble going up and down stairs, start her on glucosamine supplements, that should help loosen/lubricate the joints. Also don't let her jump up or maybe even help her down the stairs if she has to use them. Any extra pressure on joints that are already sore is only going to cause her more pain.
I think labs can live pretty long lives if cancer doesn't hit them first. My friend had a lab that lived to be 14, so I think you still have some years left with her:)
I think the average is 12-14. I think you could go over 14. Our yellow labrador lived to be 14 and a half. She was struggling with arthrtis and at the time had trouble getting up. =( Hurts to think of all of that again. She had many unknown problems at the end. It would have required surgery to figure out the problem (obviously we were not going to put her through that at 14). She had been sneezing blood every once in a while. When it started it took a while to stop. Poor girl. =( It was very rough in the end. Anyway, i'd say you've got at least another good 5 years with your pup.

Hi. I have a very healthy 2 year old female chocolate lab. She is a wonderful dog.
I also heard that Labs are quite prone to getting hip dysplasia. Also, it can occur at any age. Glucosamine & Chondroitin is a good supplement to give your Labrador in order to prevent and to help with joint problems. Glucosamine & Chondroitin is available in either tablet or liquid form. K-9 Liquid Health is more easily assimilated into the body than tablets. JB pets sells K-9 Liquid Health Glucosamine. It has Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and OptiMSM. Great product!!! Also, your dog will love the taste. Tablets are good also. But like I said before, K9 Liquid Health Glucosamine, Chondroitin, & MSM (OptiMSM)absorbs more easily and better than tablets.
Some dog foods have glucosamine & chondroitin in them. I've been told by several people though that the amount is so minimal not even to benefit your dog. That's why you end up having to get tablet or liquid supplements.
