Our puppy gets car sick. We thought it was because he was associating the car ride with the vet so we took him on some fun trips to the park etc. We have tried to build up to car rides by playing in the car and treating. He seems to be more relaxed but after a very short trip he is vomiting. He is also fine on the interstate (ie straight) but anytime there are corners or bumpy roads he gets sick. Any thoughts on how we can cure this? Or do you think he will grow out of it (he is 5 months old)?
My dog Rocky gets car sick a lot too. For longer trips we give him 1/4 tablet of gravol and this seems to do the trick. For short car rides we just lay down a blanket, he usually only pukes up his dog food and its easy to clean. Try not going for car rides till after his food has had time to settle. Or don't feed him until the evening, when you plan on spending the most time at home.
i read awhile back that some people use ginger snap cookies to settle the dogs stomach during car rides. you can also use oer the counter dramamine, just ask your et for the correct dose for your dogs weight.
Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.
What breed of dog do you have? I know a lot of Whippets get car sick, but I can't remember what the owners do since my dogs don't have this problem. I'll ask around and if I can find this post again I'll let you know.
I would not suggest using over the counter dramamine. My friend gave it to her dog prior to traveling to a show. The dog was not himself all weekend. And when she got back(she is a vet tech) she did blood work on him. Can't remember if it was reduced kidney function or liver. But she said she will never give it again. My two pups(actually 14 months old) have not taveled that much. But the few times they do, they have gotten car sick. They do travel in crates. But this time I put them in the lower stack and it did reduce it some on the way to the show. And on the way home neither of them got sick. Also cushioning the ride with a form bed and covering the crate helps reduce the motion sickness. I live in the mountains, so there is no way around curvey roads, and my driveway is like a cattle trail.
He's your friend, your partner, your defender your dog.You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours faithful and true to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to worthy of such devotion
The beagle gets car sick as well. If you think it is stre related, then their are safe OTC stress reducing drops you can give them before the trip, I have been told (though havent tried it yet myself) some show folks suggested giving her a couple of ginger snap cookies before leaving....sounds weird but they say it works.
People are like slinky's, not really good for much. But its still fun to push them down the stairs.
Thanks for all your suggestions and hints. I will try the ginger and see if that helps. And yes he drools alot too right before he gets sick. He used to start drooling badly as soon as we got in the car, but he has got better on that aspect. I think he really just needs to get used to traveling.
