Fleas are so bad right now in Texas! It didn't really get cold in the winter so I've been hearing that this year they are worse than ever. Poor Lacy is allergic to flea bites and has been so itchy. I've never had a big flea problem but even one flea getting on her makes her itchy. She got fleas on her for the first time this year about a month ago while staying over at a friend's house. I bought advantage a couple days later to put on her. The fleas were gone and she hasn't been scratching as much until this week. I guess the advantage wore off early because I noticed a few fleas on her last night. So the vet recommended Frontline because it is supposed to last longer than advantage. So we're trying that this time. I've also been giving her Children's Benadryl for the allergy. I've given her 3mL 3 times today (vet's suggestion). She's been a little sleepier than normal but at least stops scratching for a while. It just seems worse than ever this year and it seems impossible to keep fleas completely off of her. I guess we'll do all we can though..
I use dawn dishsoap (has to be dawn, no generic) on the body and then baby shampoo on the face, as it's tearless. The fleas are bad in Kansas, too. About 2 weeks after applying Frontline Plus, my dogs had fleas.. so I bathed them in dawn, and the vet told me that they are so bad this year.. people are having to give frontline every three weeks instead of every four.
I have only had this problem once and it was many years ago. What a horrible thing to have in your home.
My cat brought fleas into the home where I seen them in my baby sons hair also seen them leap across the floor when scrubbing it.
You may want to tell your friend?
What I did was tore the whole house upside down. Removed the cushions of the sofa and sat them on the side. Removed the mattress from the beds, opened up the cupboard doors and closet doors.
I then fumigated the whole house for three days. I put flea bombs in each room and every closet.
One day to fumigate and two days of airing it out and washing EVERYTHING. My son was only 1 year so he stayed at Grandmas. Fleas where gone and I learned to use frontline and never had a problem since.
Frontline has to be on for several months before it works right. Thus using it year around.
I sure hope you get rid of those darn fleas! :) Say, they also make a spray for fleas to kill right on the spot. I use that also. I laughed so hard when I read the directions. "Point at cat and spray"! LOL no kidding dick Tracy!
So far so good, we have not been bothered by fleas. We live in Dallas, and fortunately we don't have any other dogs living right around us right now, which might help. I had rather bathe in Dawn or use something else other than Frontline or any of the other products for fleas. Mandy could not walk on her hind legs after having used Frontline. I am just afraid of these products.
We use Heartguard Plus for Heartworms. We've never had a big problem with fleas and this isn't an infestation or anything. Just a couple fleas I've noticed on her. Haven't seen any today though since I applied the frontline last night. I guess I'm just going to have to keep that frontline on her about every three weeks, and keep the benadryl around in case she gets itchy.
I remember once when I was little (probably like 4 or 5) and we had a flea infestation at our house. My Mom and Dad saw fleas hopping across the floor so we had to check into a hotel for the night while they bombed the house. I've never seen fleas hopping around at my house - just see them on the pets.
Oh, I did tell my friend that she had fleas at her house. I even had a flea hop on me that night. Yuck. They must have been pretty bad. Lacy started itching immediately that night. She got a flea bath in the morning and advantage a couple days later. Now three weeks after that we've applied frontline.
i know you said it was just a few fleas m13lucky but i would check your puppies pooop for worms .. it just takes one ingested flea and then you have a huge problem .. a huge segmented tape worm of a problem .. trust me it's gross!! YUCK!!
if my dog could talk i'm sure he'd say "woof .. woof!!"
ooh..I know..tape worms are sooo nasty!! Lacy had them when I got her as a puppy...yuck. My parents live in the country and have a yorkie and he has gotten tape worms every year. I do watch her everytime she poops..gross I know..but I want to make sure it looks okay and all.
We used Frontline one time and Annie got really sick and broke out in hives. We switched to Advantage and havent had a problem since. Dont know whats in the Frontline thats not in the Advantage, but something didnt agree with her. They all get an occasional bath in Skin-so-soft also. It repels the fleas and keeps their coats shiney. They smell good too.
If you are a dog and your owner suggests that you wear a sweater, suggest that he wear a tail.
I have used the Skin-so-soft too and like it. You can also besides bathing them in it, delute it down and just mist them and it is suppose to keep fleas off. Keeps them smelling good in between baths if nothing else.
i am sorry to impose on your thread with my way off topic question m13lucky but i wanted to ask you if your himalayan kitten that you purchased recently was from a cfa registered cattery. still no luck for us finding our new addition and we have been on a forever search. we have emailed countless catteries, spoken with a few crazys, visited 3 catteries one of which was over 300 miles away and still are hitting every dead end possible. either the look isn't right .. or the price is unreasonable, or theres no female and as in the case of louie .. well we won't go there. i was just hoping that maybe you could point me in the same direction you have taken since you mentioned your breeder was reputable. thanks for any help you can offer and again i apologize for being off topic.
if my dog could talk i'm sure he'd say "woof .. woof!!"
You are in Dallas? I work at the Petco in Carrollton and I have heard how horrible the fleas and flies are this year because of the rain. Like previously noted, Frontline Plus and K9 Advantix work pretty good. I use K9 Advantix on my own dog and haven't seen any fleas yet (fingers are crossed). I always recommend Dawn dishsoap for people who don't want to use chemicals on their dogs or for those who have puppies younger than 12 weeks. I have been told by our manager and our groomer that it suffocates the fleas and therefore kills them.
