My hubby and I were checking out a car show on Father's Day yesterday with the 2 kids (ages 3.5 and 8)
Lots of people bring their dogs and my kids LOVE seeing them all - they take after mom. I do make sure that they ask permission before approaching ANY dog to be sure that everyone is safe and happy.
Well - doesn't this GORGEOUS pitbull girl come sauntering by with her owner. I thought she was a male she was so blocky and stocky. We asked the owner if we could pat her and he said she loved kids and was super friendly, which was true. She just loved all over my kids and they did the same. It was awesome.
My husband got upset with me because he said that I shouldn't have allowed the kids to pat the dog b/c pitbulls have been known to snap and just bite for no reason.
Now - I wasn't born YESTERDAY and I know that they get a bad rap but is that true? Can they just turn for no reason? I thought it was because they were either poorly bred, poorly socialized or just had really crappy owners who trained them to hate everyone.
Pitbulls really only dislike other dogs - right?
Not asking for any other reason than to prove to hubby that this dog was in her glory and wouldn't hurt the kids intentionally...
if it has tires or testicles, you're going to have trouble with it.......
I agree with what Stormy said. I met someone, who said she would never own a pit, because I guess she's seen where the pit turns on the owner, I'm skeptical, and I'm in an area where the people are not smart. Honestly..they are..not. So, I know other factors went in to play if it was in deed a "turn". I do know a pit in a shelter, who I know for a fact would NEVER turn on a person. She is a sweetheart, and if I had a treadmill I would get her, she has soo much energy. More than I would be able to get rid of through walks or playing, I'm pretty sure. Maybe I'll make my way up there and see how she is with other animals.
I think it's safe to assume that when you are out and an owner has his dog on a leash and says it's friendly and you may pet it, that petting it is okay and not dangerous. Unless it's growling or acting funny, of course! Pit bulls, like any other dog, have different personalities. As far as breed characteristics, they should be friendly toward people and very well could be aggressive toward animals. But each is an individual, just as with any breed. You did the exact right thing by asking the owner. We like it when people want to pet our dogs, and our dogs do too!
"Be who you are and say what you feel. Because those that matter, don't mind...And those that mind....don't matter."
I agree with shiny, it doesn't always really depend on the breed but the dog itself. Sounds like you had nothing to worry about. You can tell if your talking to the right kind of pit owner or not. And, again, like shiny said they were not bred to turn on people. They were bred to fight dogs.
