My 5 month old boxer-pitbull mix has not had an appetite for the past 2 days. We also noticed that her kennel had a whitish film in it this morning. Don't know if it from urine or not. She also has permanent teeth coming in. Any ideas on what may be the problem?
a dog without an appetite is a red flag.I would suppliment this dog with Nutrical and if it doesn't eat soon, another day or so ,even I would consult a vet. My bitch went on a hunger strike while she was pregnant. she picked up a virus, dog flu, from another bitch I took to a show. She lost the litter, but I did save her, but it was an uphill battle. Good luck
lost appetite may be due to many possible reasons. have you checked him/her of any ticks or fleas? sometimes a dog who has contacted a flea for the first time find it really hard to eat anything. sometimes a dog in heat also tend to lose their appetite but by the age of your dog it's near impossible that it's caused by heat or hormonal changes. his shots may also be the reason for his abnormal loss of appetite. i strongly suggest that you try to give him a variety of different food. once you see the food he seems to like, it would be a good idea to tolerate his will. meaning; just give in to whatever food he wants. afterall, a little nourishment is way way better than none at all. you may also want to check the nearest pet store near you, and check if they offer any dextrose powder. more often than not, even the dogs who lost their appetite dont lose their need to drink. dextrose powder was specially designed for dogs who are suffering from malnurishment or lost of appetite. it serves as a suppliment until your dog's appetite is back to normal.
The whitish film you are talking about sounds like bile. Probably from the stomach being empty. Mine will throw up bile if they don't eat. I try to get them to eat alittle bit of something in the mornings to keep that from happening. Hope your baby feels better real soon.
i have a pitbull lab mix and she is only 6 months old. i got her about a week or 2 ago and she was abused and very neglected. her name is daisy and i dont know what to do to get her weight up... all of her ribs are showing and i feed her all the time and give her treats when ever she wants them but it doesnt seem to work.. does any one have any advice i need HELP... thanks alot NAVYwife
QWhat brand dog food are you feeding her? How much? How often? Can or dry alone? Have you had her vet check done? If she is very underweight and does not gain anything with every effort being made, I would take her to the vet for blood work to check her out. Has she been wormed? or tested to see if she has them?
People are like slinky's, not really good for much. But its still fun to push them down the stairs.
POOCHPAL: My first thought would be a blockage.... a dog that doesn't eat and is throwing up is a HUGE red flag. Since it is Sunday, I recommend giving the pup some electrolytes for hydration (Pedialyte plain is preferred) and you may try some plain yogurt as well.... if she's thrown up or had runny stools, her system may be stripped of healthy bacteria, and the yogurt will replenish that. Offer some chicken or beef broth as well... it will give her some calories and hydrate her a bit without upsetting the stomach too much. Monday, if the pup is not improving, definitely take her to a vet and find out what is wrong.
NAVYWIFE: I answered your question in the pitbull/lab mix thread.
i feed her like twice a day and a pretty healthy amount i feed her the pedigree healthy joints stuff and the person i got her from said that she has been wormed but i dont know if i can belive her or not i got her as a dog for protection but mostly to keep me company... my husband is in the navy and he is getting ready to leave for a 6-8 month tour... i havent found a good vet i just moved in to a new area and i dont know what to look for in vet offices like credentials....
poochpal: It could be your pup has been poisoned, eaten something that made him ill, has an obstruction, parasites and so mnay other things. There is no way to tell for sure. Please get the pup to a vet asap.
NAVYwife here are foods that are much better quality than what you are feeding: Timberwolf organics Nature's Variety Merrick Solid Gold Canidea
If you are trying to nurse the dog back to health and proper weight I suggest feeding the total amount of food split into 3 feedings and then talking it down to two as the pup gets to a better weight and is about 8 months to a year old.
Thanks to everyone who answered and tried to help. Unfortunatley my poor baby had parvo and didn't make it.This was our first dog and a very devastating thing to go through. I cried as if she were one of my own children.Again thanks.
