We have two female litter mates we picked up from the side of the road. We're guessing they're 2-3 months old. One is almost solid black; the other is mostly black with some brindle markings on her legs, chest and rear. They are long-legged, very fast, very playful, very smart - already learning commands well. Their feet are webbed, and they love water - they stand in their water dish. (My former landlord's pure lab did this.) Their fur is medium-short, and when it's wet, it appears curly (or wavy); they have loooong, pointed tails. Ears can be "perked," but usually lay down. We think they are part lab and I say at least part border collie, but my husband (who's had border collies) thinks maybe part greyhound. This is the best close-up we have (most pics look like black blobs). In the foreground is Kate's ramrod tail... Haven't weighed them, but they are thin (appear to be built lean - thin ribcage, shoulders and hips). Judging by the size of their paws, they are going to be medium- to large-sized dogs in height. Oh, and they eat ALOT! (About three times as much as our full-grown Aussie-collie mix).
They have Labrador eyes and that smile is pure retriever. But as to what else, I'd have to see them in about six months. From your description there's some sight hound in there. Greyhound is a good guess, but Afghan Hound is also a possibility.
Isn't it interesting getting a mixed breed puppy? Every day they spend growing up is like opening a Christmas present!
I looked at the pic before reading your post and my guess was then greyhound x newfie. and after reading your post I still think thats my closest bet.. probably with some other breeds mixed in as well..
If you think dogs can't count, try putting three dog biscuits in your pocket and then giving Fido only two of them.
