i just recently got a kitten. I have three dogs and the kitten seems to be spending most of his time behind the couch. I have begun to smell poop back there and am not to sure what to do about him not using the litter box. The people we got him from said that he was litter trained. any advice is welcome
Make sure the kitten has a totally safe area (other than under the couch) where the dogs have no access. Put her litter pan and her food and water where the dogs can't get to her, and where she won't have to run from the dogs to get to her stuff. It would be great if you have a bedroom or at least a bathroom, where she can go, and they can't. Cat trees are also great. Anyplace where she can climb and get away from the dogs and not be scared. Also, train the dogs to stay away from her. The "leave it" command comes in very handy.
Yes, the kitten needs to be isolated into one room. Preferably a bedroom for now. Close the door. The kitten is scared. Everything is new, no litter mates or mama. Let them get used to the one room, and go into the room for the attention it needs. Then when it is comfortable in it's new home, let it explore with supervised visits. Once the kitten feels comfortable and safe, it will begin to explore and be more braver. It takes time, don't expect it to happen overnight. Maybe only a week.
