Hey, congrats on your new puppy :) They're so much fun, aren't they? I just got a new puppy myself about a month ago, Missy, and she's a bundle of trouble :) But she's a sweetheart. Anyway, I think a lot of puppies do what yours is doing -- eating their poop. I think it's normal, but it's definitely not sanitary (in my opinion) to let them eat it. What I would do is whenever you see him start to eat the feces, say "No eat" with a firm tone, and if the problem continues, try smacking him on the nose, just a little bit to get the point across, while saying "no". Then give his lots of hugs and kisses and praises when he listens...also try distracting him with a toy. Good Luck!! :)

The medical term for stool eating is coprophagia. Dogs eat their own stool for several reasons: they are being underfed or fed a poor quality diet , they are not properly digesting their food or absorbing the nutrients, etc, etc...sometimes it can be just a bad habit. Their is a product called Forbid that you can buy from your vet that you put on the dog's food that makes the stool taste bad and hopefully it will break the habit. Also make sure you are cleaning up the yard often enough.
