Well when you go on vacation, you take your dog to a kennel, right? Well, from expeireance, kennels are NO GOOD! a lot of the time, dogs go to kennels for a week, feeling tired, scared, and some don't eat because it's not used to the place their in, with a cage, (my dogs don't use cages, only my puppy) their not used to a cage, and they can get a kennel coughf, and they are surrounded with other dogs, they don't know. my family and i ask someone to come to my house and take care of my 3 dogs, 1 cat, and 3 ferrets. it's much better, you know what i mean, and does anyone put their dogs in a kennel?
Well that is your opinion and you are entitled, but not all kennels are like that, and they use fences and dog run to prevent fighting, breedings, escapes. Haveing 5 dogs run around your house is fine when they are yours, but 50 dogs running around your house that dont know each other not so fine. If your dog is current on vacs then KC shouldnt be a worry, and if your dog has never been kennel trained then it will be stressful, but it is a hell of alot better than leaving tem in the yard with a bowl of food. There is no way I would ever give a stranger my house keys so they could feed my dogs, and the chow would never let them in anyhow.
Jeez, it's not like the dog is spending time in San Quentin. Most people here are pet lovers, so I am going to assume that they would place their dogs in a quality kennel. These types of places do not have the dogs caged 24 hours p/ day, 7 days a week. They are getting sufficient excercise, food, water and attention. Chill out.
I took my dogs to the Doggie Dude Ranch about 4 yrs ago. That was the last time I went on vacation. My dogs are such home bodies and creatures of habit that they were so spastic when we came to pick them up that Grace peed all over the floor in the lobby. The place was so noisy with barking dogs. It didn't have any comforts of a home. They wouldn't even let me bring their dog beds from home. They provided them with a blanket.
Finding a sitter to come to the house is a lot better solution. A friend or family member would be best, but now they have professional pet sitters that are licensed and bonded to sit in your home. I just haven't had the nerve to try any of them.
Besides, nobody can care for my group better than can. I don't like going on vacation that much anyway.
Not all boarding facilities are bad. I do agree that a lot of dogs aren't used to that situation and are stressed by it, but most make it through just fine. I have a little dog who doesn't do well being kept in a cage (other than her crate at home). Most boarding facilities are just cages and runs and I'm not crazy about those for dog. She's too spoiled LOL. She is used to being with me almost all the time and has gone on vacation with me everytime but twice. The first time I left her at a boarding facility was only for one night. It was a pet hotel and she stayed in a cute suite they had. It was really nice with a big bed and everything and had murals painted on the walls. She was nervous at first but settled down and slept most of the time. The second time I went on vacation was for 5 days and she stayed with a friend of mine. I have to say I was worried about her the whole time - I was actually more worried about her when she stayed with my friend than when she was at the boarding facility. I just went tonight to an open house for a new luxury boarding and doggie day care place here. They have nice large suites with themes and huge beds for them and all. And the dogs being boarded get to be in doggie day care for the day. I plan to board her there next time I have to go on a vacation without her. She's also going to start going to doggie daycare every once in a while there because I'm starting vet school this fall and will be away from her more.
